Title: Gas Tank
Post by: arbakken on June 18, 2008, 09:02:30 PM
So, I bought a non-running '01 that had a bit of rust in the gas tank and some gummed up carbs. It had a vice grip clamping the overflow hose on the bottom of the tank (you know the one) shut. Well, I'm doing electrolysis on the tank and noticed that a good bit of water was coming out of that tang. So, i've got that clamped hose on the end, but I'm thinking that there must be a leak in that tube. Anyone else encountered that problem, and what did you do to fix it? I'm thinking about cramming some tank putty in there and crimping the end, but figured I'd go for advice first.

Oh, and once I get done with the electrolysis, I'm going to kreem the tank

So you're saying there is a leak in the tank overflow tube? Any chance you can see the source of the leak (i.e. rusty portions on the tube running inside the tank)? Will Kreem cover up those rusty bits?

If you just plug the drain tube, what will happen if you spill gas inside the filler cap or if you get some water in there that needs to drain out?  :dunno_white:

I think so, assuming the tube is supposed to be hole free (logically, that makes sense, but i've heard of crazier things) Looking at the tube through the filler hole, it looks perfect. If I sealed up the hole on the bottom, I'd seal the hole on the top as well

The fitting you're talking about drains the recessed gas cap area.If the tube running from there, thru the tank, out the bottom has holes, replace the tank.Por 15 and Kreem will not seal it up and you do not wanna block it off.If you spill a little bit of gas in the recessed cap area, then you ride,it's going to burn up your personal bits.Same thing if you get caught/ride in the rain.A good metal shop can cut it out,and weld in a replacement. That cost more than a good used tank.Beware off electrolisis. If there is any little bit of rust under the paint it's doing to peel the paint.I would personally replace the tank with a used one.I would stick with an 01+ large tank.

I don't know, if you have a line on a new tank, i'd be all for it. I can't find one.

Anyways, I don't have very much money into this thing

I'll buy this tank of yours if you do swap it.
I will actually cut into the under side of the tank and try to fix it.
Cool.

you know, I was thinking about it and talking to a friend of mine, and I'm going to drill out the tube, and replace it. I figure a chunk of brake line would be perfect. I just gotta get done with the electrolysis, and go at it.
