So, I was an idiot and turned the parking light on while I was at work. I walk out now and the battery is dead. I've pushed started dirtbikes before but never the GS. Do I still do it in second gear? Any tips or tricks? Best part is we're getting absolutely hammered with rain so it should be interesting. Thanks for the help.
I'm like you, only had to do it on dirtbikes. I would say second or maybe third gear, not exatly sure. Get up some speed, give a little bounce on the seat, and drop the clutch.
I did it for about 3 weeks straight until I could get a new battery. What I do is...
1) make sure the key is turned to on (ask me how I know, after about 10 tries with nothing happening)
2) run while straddling the bike and get going as fast as you can (in neutral)
3) sit on the bike, pull in the clutch, kick it into second
4) pop the clutch out. It may take a few turns of the engine until it actually starts. Once it does...about 0.5 seconds or so, pull the clutch back it
5) ride around in higher RPM's 5k+ to charge the battery up again.
6) park the bike, go inside and have a beer, and don't forget to congratulate yourself on learning something new. :cheers:
Thanks guys for the help, I got 'er going (twice actually, long story). Hopefully I charged it for long enough, but if not I can just push start it again.

Turn 'on' the key, set the starter switch 'on'. Set the gear in second. Grip the clutch and run along till you attain a decent speed and then release the clutch. The bike starts. Immediately grip the clutch back again so that you can control it.
I did this for 3 weeks until I realized that my bike had goats! yuck :mad:
