Title: Carb Help
Post by: Chef GS500f 06 on June 24, 2008, 04:32:33 AM
Just Rejetted with mods(lunchbox, full jardine exhaust)engine starts up fine in PRI, dies in RUN, rides in PRI but boggs and sputters in low rpm. I messed with the air mix screw, helped a little (still running on PRI), is this a float heigh issue?? Help please.

checking your float height is pretty easy. the search function will find sanjay and gsjack's (or was it kerry's ? ) tutorial on how to do it.

since it doesn't run proper on ON or RES, but only PRIME, i'd bet you have a petcock issue, or fuel lines routed wrong.

depending on your setup, it's usually close to 2-3 1/2 turns out on the air mixture screws. that shouldn't effect teh running much other than mixture at lower rpm. (shouldn't)

I know the petcocks are cheap, but its basically brand new, I was a little confused about hoses, I took it apart so long ago I forgot. I looked at Kerry's diagram, still confused.  Frame mouted petcock has lower hose to bottom of carbs, I put hose from RES to lower nozel from tank, and PRI to nozel that is positioned higher, and then little hose from tank to back of frame mounted petcock right?? Could it still run even though hoses are wrong?? Would that still make it bogg??

Maybe this will help with the hose routing.  http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/suzuki-motorcycle-gs500f-2006-fuel-chicken/o/m9752sch510180

Float height could be set to low.

Ok, whenever I get out of work I'm planning on checking the hoses and then taking out the carbs again and setting the floats right. Hopefully that helps the PRI setting and the bogging in low rpm's. Anything else I should check while i'm in there??

I know this sounds goofy, but check the numbers on the jets.Of course they should be the same, but the old ones may have gotten mixed in.Unless you nearly destroyed the old one while removing them. That's quite common.

I changed them to 22.5 65 147.5. I think foats are high. I had some hoses ran wrong, bike ran fine for a while then started sputtering and I had to put in PRI to get it home. Its not the hoses, carbs are clean(only 4000 miles on bike) just rejetted, hoses are right, I'm thinking float height and maybe spark plugs. When it running it seems spruttery and not crisp. Inputs are appreciated guys.

01+ carbs usually dont have floats go high. Older carbs yea all the time.
Cool.

Yeah, i took the carbs out and raised the floats a little, now the bike is idling REALLY high at 3500 4000 rpm, idle screw only raises higher. I need to put the floats back how they were asap because I think Thats the idle issue, but now I'm wondering why its sputtering in low rpm's and dying in ON position. Budda, what do you think I should do next? Hoses ran right, carbs new and floats rigt I guess, whats making the sputtering and loss of power in low rpm??
