Title: diference in frames?
Post by: ibuiltmine-o1oo on June 26, 2008, 09:37:11 AM
Ok, i have an 05 GS500 that hit a curb pretty fast. bent the forks, blew the tire and bent the wheel.....
STUPID me i bought this thing cheap and then bought used forks and a wheel off ebay, and when i was tearing it down it cracked the head stock!

I found a 1990 frame on ebay in my price range... will the stuff from the 05 fit on the 90?

auctions ending soon!

yes and no.

if you're planning on re-using your fairings, the older frame won't have the tabs for them to connect to. other wise, you'll be fine. oh, the oil cooler may/may not need tabs also, but you'll already be welding... soooooo... ya dig ?

btw , someoen always has a clear title frame herer on gstwins.

got any pictures of your cracked steerer tube ?

I see.....  II just got it as a cheapo way to get my wife riding, plus its a failry good looking bike with the fairings and the composite light. not too fast all stock, but light enough for her to not be intimidated.
I dont have a pic, but i could get one in the next few days.

Why has a clear title frame?? Im interested!

The rear frame changed in 01.The tail plastics and seat will not fit a 89 to 00 frame without some welding. You need an 02 to 08 frame to easily transfer everything over to another frame.Front forks are all the same. The brake caliper changed in 96.Wheels from 89 to 97 Katana600/750 are the same.Just use a GS brake disc and plastic hub cover on the other side.

You will need a frame with a clear title because you will have to register the new frame. The VIN number follows the frame. You have to use the new frame's title.

so an 02 to 08 will pretty much be a bolt on changeover..... i think finding an 02 frame is going to be hard. Are they aluminum?

Welding tabs and stuff is no preoblem whatsoever for me on steel!

That frame is in bad shape. The steering neck has way to much rust in it as does the rest of the frame.I bought a rust free 90 frame last year.02 + frames are not scarce. You just have to look out for them on fleabay and here. Also let starwalt know you're looking. He tracks somethings like that.

by the way.... even being steel that thing has to be a lot lighter then like a regular ol gs 750, or other standard bike frames. The motor is a stressed memeber, right?
