Title: Yoshimura mid-pipe install???
Post by: GSrookie500 on June 26, 2008, 12:24:00 PM
Hey everyone, so I'm installing a new Yoshimura trs slip-on exhaust that's originally for the new 05-07 gs500's, and the mid-pipe seems a 1/4" bigger then my '97 stock pipe. So my question is, should I try to work with what I have and have the exhaust shop expand the stock pipe to fit the slip-on yoshimura pipe, or even make an adapter piece, or just have them build a new mid-pipe?

I'm not familiar with the back pressure of motorcycle engines, but I would think it having them make you a new mid=pipe would be the better of the two ideas. I'm sure it wouldn't cost much at all to make, it will give you better exhaust flow, and you'll have a new mid-pipe...and that's one less thing to rust on you.

You want the pipe to slip over the GS,then you want the can to slip over the mid pipe. You want the pipe to get bigger as it goes back to the can.If you can get away with flaring the GS to fit inside the pipe then do that.Just be care full with flaring the GS pipe.It has a habit of splitting.

I have a '01 and the same problem when I got my slip-on.  The Yosh midpipe is a gorgeous stainless piece, so I decided to keep it.  I took my cut exhaust to a Midas shop and they welded on another piece and flared that to the correct diameter.  Cost me about $30.  Still haven't repainted it to match, though, so you can see it separately as the matte unpainted surface in between the black OEM pipe and stainless midpipe.

I would imagine that the easiest and cheapest solution is to get the muffler shop to expand your existing end.

The stock header is to brittle to expand much before it splits. It may expand 1/8th of an inch before it splits. My exhaust guy ruined one header trying to expand it.  :icon_rolleyes:

One of the untold stories I have yet to share.  :icon_rolleyes:

That's exactly the piece I got from Pepboys for $2.99 to connect the pipe, NO expanding of the stock pipe or any big mods. All I did was take the stock muffler-pipe that I cut off and the Yoshimura slip-on pipe in to match them up with an adapter piece. I believe the size I bought was 2" O.D. to a 1 3/4" O.D. I'm not sure I scraped off the sticker before installing. Sorry everybody.

I'll post a pic before welding on that piece. :thumb:

but then again mine is an 07, good work though for you!!
Sounds great doesn't it :)

It does sound awesome  I paid somebody $15 bucks to weld on that piece. Everything slid in perfect and even re-painted the exhaust w/ some hi-temp paint.

Just a reminder: I went to Pepboys for the adapter

**Make sure you take your cut off exhaust end(w/ the muffler) and the Yoshimura mid-pipe in to match up the adaptor piece for both pipes to connect**

Like I said I wish I didn't rip off that label for the size of the adapter, but then again your pipe size might be different then mine, not sure.

Hey KPF noticed you're in Ontario as well, curious who rejetted the bike for you after the exhaust install.  I'm debating picking up the yosh as well but not comfortable with the rejet myself.
