Title: GS 500 Street Fighter Project Update Plenty-O Pics
Post by: Fry on June 26, 2008, 01:19:22 PM
Whelp a massive Dental Infection has given me a few days off so I was able to get some more work done, though the Percoset made things a little sketchy.

I got my LED Brake/Tail Light and LED Directionals in the other day and tried mounting them up.

I was able to mount the 2 LED B/T Pods on the back of the Monster seat.

I modified the Stock Plate Bracket and used the Direction Pod LEDs to mount the plate and Directionals.

Next I made a Electrical Component Package Tray, on it I'll mount the CDI and whatever other Relays or Boxes that I need for the Rear Lighting.

The 2 Tabs I cut off the stock right rail and welded them to the front of the seat stay, these tangs will  mount the 2 relays or whatever they are

I plan on mounting the Fined Metal Box (Rectifier?) on the back of the battery box.

(http://inlinethumb57.webshots.com/31800/2437684340073478356S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2437684340073478356uVphyx)

Next I made some paper patterns for 2 side panels to fit in the spaces created by the upper and lower rails, this task is proving harder than I thought to get a perfect fit.

(http://inlinethumb64.webshots.com/40191/2687202340073478356S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2687202340073478356rlQHCL)

Once I can get 2 side panels created to my satisfaction and welded in I'll weld in a SS Tube from the back of the frame rails, running along the top rail to the created Package Tray, I'll use this to run any wires I need to hide. With the B/T lights mounted to the seat I'll make the end connection a little long with a quick disconnect so that when I remove the seat I'll be able to easily disconnect them.

Once thats done I can do my final weld prep, grinding everything smooth and symmetrical, placing Bondo over all welded areas and smoothing them into the existing metal. By using Bondo and then painting every thing I will be able to see a crack forming in any weld as it will crack the painted Bondo area. Once this is done I will pull the swing arm and shock, forks and triple trees, and prep and paint them and begin re-assembly of the bike.

Well time for another Pill.

That looks really good. I've been thinking about painting my GS a similar shade of purple. I wish I had the mans of fabricating all that cool stuff right now. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Looks great, but I think your local law enforcement are going to have a hay day with those turn signals!  :o

Cool ! The octagonal steel you're using is going to look great when it's all done.

Are you planning to cut off the tabs on the fuel tank that previously held the rear plastics ?

What LED's did you go with, if you get a chance can you hook up the stock light and the LED's to give an idea how they compare in intensity ?

Great project, looks like a blast !

Would love to see the tails working. Maybe its me, but is that enough brakes to get people to stop behind you? I really like the fabrication work though,  :thumb: :thumb: I wish I could fabricate cool stuff.

Dude, the original motivation behind this work was simply to get rid of that "Cool" Purple color, things have sort of spiraled out of control.

Thanks for the kind words.

I hope not, though I go rig up some stockers for the Inspection, if I get it inspected. Hopefully Johnny Law won't hassle me on the street?

Yes I will be trimming the tabs off of the bottom of the tank.

The holes in the steel are actually round, and the entire sheet is covered in a tough plastic/rubber black coating.

These are the lights I went with, though these contain an Amber bulb on each end for the Turn signals, I opted for all red, but being somewhat unsatisfied with my current directional set up I might take the amber bulbs and leads out of the round pods, and mount them ion each end of the B/T pods, and have all the lights in that one area, who knows though, more planning and thought needed.

Only time will tell if there bright enough to be affective.

I don't know about cool, I'm just trying to use what I have, use the meager tools and skill I have, to come up with something thats my own. The results IMHO are so so at this point. I look at the high end GS's on this site and get discouraged, I don't have the tools, the money and most importantly the skill to get results like the heroes on this site, but I'll keep soldiering on.

I love that bike, if you ever get a chance, could you take some close up pics of the rear end/tail light set up? I really wanted to do that to mine, but I just can't see enough detail to commit to it.

would like to see mounting or wiring? the brackets that were on there broke due to them being made of very thin stock. right now its zipped-tied on there for the time being until i figure something out, but its mounted just as good, if not better.

I take pics of each part that I'm working on at the moment, when it gets closer to an assembled, working bike I will post "Far Off" shots, until then, ignore posts.

your probably going to have to make a hole for the petcock on the left side. im in the process of making peices for mine and thats the only thing iv seen so far.

You have to admit that the 6" shots only increase your anticipation to see the finished bike. I like the fact that it's sort of under wraps, makes the final reveal all the better in my opinion.

I made some good progress tonight on redoing the side panels, no pics as of yet. I do know that with the Frame and Sub Frame being some shade of Dull Aluminum, I will paint these side panels Flat Black, same as the Tank.

Even though I got the Side Panel fitments pretty tight at the moment, I plan on taking some appropriate sized flexible black rubber house, cutting it down the middle leaving one flat side and one half round side of tubing. Once everything is painted I will super glue the tubing flat side down against the Side Panel and around the perimeter of the side panels (Which are inset half the distance of the width of the frame tubing) and the frame rails where they meet. This way it will hide any gaps or un-evenness in the Side Panel to Frame seam, plus I think it will add a finished touch.

Onto my latest Idea. Many of my friends and GF have commented that with the new Dual Headlights the bike kind-a looks like "Wall-E" the Robot in the new Pixar movie, the similarities are striking.

(http://inlinethumb14.webshots.com/25037/2004744760073478356S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2004744760073478356SQDuuF)

So with that in mind I have a somewhat Korny Idea and I want to know what the masses think. The bikes paint theme overall will be that of mostly Flat shades, with the Tanks being Flat Black, perhaps the same as the engine, but definitely some variant of flat black. The chassis will be Dull/Flat aluminum, sticking with the Flat theme. So I'm thinking, I'd like a "Little Bit" of color to the bike, but what?

I haven't really fully accepted Wall-E as a flattering term for what I'm trying to make but it is funny and oddly enough the bike is a gs 500 "E", Wall-E also has a prominent "E" in his name as well, Hum??? So imagine the picture below with a flat black tank rather than the purple, what do you all think?

(http://inlinethumb21.webshots.com/3860/2530874130073478356S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2530874130073478356wfponp)

I will find a Sticker or have one made of that Red Circle with White E thats about double the size of my pathetic Microsoft Paint illustration. I will place, rotate the position of the sticker so that the "Legs" of the E are slanted upwards kinda on the same plane as the indentation of the tank/knee pocket area.

By doing this I will be officially naming her, secondly it will bring a splash of color and a bit of mystery. Some in the know will say Oh thats a "E" model, other sly individuals may or may not know the model letter but will make the coralation between the headlights and Pixar's Wall-E, some will get the double meaning, most will probably call it ghey?

Ah who knows.

*I* think it would look good, the flat black tank would flow into the seat visually, and the red E would pop and be fun, I don't think it would be ghey. If you were doing like flat yellow and a pink circle, then maybe.  ;)

I gotta know where to get that stainless honeycomb look sheet, I need to do inserts for my chin spoiler and also want to do side panels as well. I can't find diddley that I like..  a clue please??   :icon_mrgreen:

My brother use to work at a industrial speaker company and took something like 20 sheets of it for me, it's pretty thick and unruly at about a 1/8th thick. When trimming and cutting it to shape, your often left with rows with half holes and jagged lines, hence the reason for covering the Side Panel to Frame Seam with some sort of tubing or weather stripping.

As to where to buy something like it, I have no idea?, maybe here http://www.onlinemetals.com/index.cfm (http://www.onlinemetals.com/index.cfm)
