Title: HELP! I have no gas tank/seat lock key!!!!!!!!
Post by: Jackstand Johnny on June 29, 2008, 03:10:36 PM
Well I do...but it's in two pieces, and the duplicate I had made is garbage and is almost ripped in half as well. Can I order a new set specific for my bike from a dealership if I give them my VIN? It's an 89 and I can only hope they kept it in their records.

That actually happened to me when I stopped for gas once on a trip on my GS.  I was heading to western PA and almost out of gas.  I put the key in the gas and it broke right in the gas tank lock.  I was able to put the end of the key into the gas tank and turn it so I was able to fill up until my trip was over.  I went to a locksmith and they were able to fish out the rest of the key from the gas tank lock and make a new one from the two broken pieces.

yup, locksmith is your friend. Dealership might be able to do it, but it would cost lots of $$. locksmith would be a couple bucks

If you have that small black plastic fleck that has the key code on it then you can get a new key cut at pretty much any locksmiths for ~$10.

Small black plastic fleck? Theres nothing like that on these keys. Rhenter's post says it all, it's his old bike. The key I need is a duplicate and I don;t have the original. I'll be heading out to the locksmith;s tomorrow and making about 6 of each key so this won't be a problem again. The locks just feel so damn stiff.

See if there's some corrosion on the gas tank catch.... Also..Do you press down on the cap when you turn the key ( use your other hand..)? It takes tension off the catch...saves keys.

Small plastic fleck... when you get a new bike ( do they still do this???  Last dealer-new bike circa 1994 for me..)  they  have a little plastic tab that has the key code on it.....

Just go into any locksmith and ask for a new key to be cut to code.  I did not even need the tab with the code on it.

Don't know how they did it but they looked up my make, year and model and 5 minutes later I had a new key :dunno_white:

Keep ignition and all locks well lubricated  :thumb:

Well I did go to the locksmith, actually he met me at wal-mart while I was getting my prescription. IT was $12 all in all for two duplicates of the broken gas tank/seat lock key and a copy of the ignition key. He did it with some old school mahcine in the back of his van. Wow, that didn't come out right.
