Title: Carb removal help
Post by: Harrylu on June 30, 2008, 06:38:37 PM
So I decided to clean and rejet my carbs, but am having some trouble removing the choke and throttle cables.  The Carb rebuild how to and the Poor Man's Rejetting guide kind of gloss over this.

For the choke, it says to pull back and then to the left.  Does this mean that I'm suppose to compress the spring past the clip (the back part) and then push it forward (the left part)?

For the throttle, it says to losen the cable and both nuts, then push the cable up.  I also had a problem disconnecting the clutch cable when I did my crankcase cleaning this weekend.  Kind of lost on this one.  I have no idea how I'm suppose to disconnect a wire cable?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I tried taken some pics but may need to read up on posting them.

BTW my baby's a '96 GS.

Thanks

the choke is easiest, you just push the slide in gently and work the cable sheath free of the back of the holder, then work the end ball free of the slide.  You may have to hold the spring back to free up some slack.
The throttle, I held some slack in it by holding the butterflies open w/ the throttle linkage between the carbs, at this time loosened the nuts to allow the cable sheath to free up from the holder, then while holding tension of the throttle (return spring between carbs)  worked the cable itself/ endball free.   There are little slots for the cable to loosen/replace where the end ball rests.    To put the throttle cable back correctly, notice there are exposed threads on the adjuster that are slightly more weathered/oxidized looking than the threads that were covered by the nut, which on my bike appeared new and shiny.   Put the nut back so the new and shiny threads are covered up again and you should be bery bery close to where you left from.   I hope this hasn't been to crazily written as I'm a raging obsessive compulsive  (tic tic)

I actually sometimes pull the thing off the manifolds with the throttle still attached and turn it upside down and yank the bowls off ... Then swap jets, then fit it back and pull the tops off and get the needles out.
But for a soaking+cleaning best to get the cables off.
Cool.

Yeah, I do the same thing... the throttle is just a pain...

if you're just swapping jets, leave it alone. If you're cleaning them, take them off. I took mine off the other day, but I don't remember how. It was pretty self explanatory IIRC

+1

I take them off the manifold before I remove the choke and throttle cables seemed easier to me.

For sure take off from the manifold.   I hadn't though about accessing the jets from the bottom by leaving the cables on though.  Cool deal.
