Title: New samsung instinct or Palm
Post by: bombadillo on July 02, 2008, 09:58:54 AM
I'm getting a new phone as my a920 is beat and doesn't have any fun toys that are up to todays specs.  I'm looking into the instinct for myself and a palm centro for my wife (in pink of course)!  Anyway, I have no real hands on with the instinct and yada yada iphone blah blah, att sucks in my area so don't even try to get me to go that route.  Iphone is cool but its a pretty only kind of thing, the features aren't as nice as the instinct.  What are your opinions of the instinct versus one of the higher end palm phones instead?  I will be using this for GPS as well as media.

UMMM  how bout the iphone 3g does everything you'll ever want.  The only people I hear talking trash about the iPhone or it's new 3g version are the ones who haven't ever used one for a period of time.  3G is supposed to have a wider coverage area along with significantly faster speeds.

my coworker has the palm centro with sprint.. and she's had nothing but problems.. she's had it 6 months and gone through like 4 phones.

THe first one just randomly hung.. the second one wouldnt take more than 100 phone entries.. the third after a while started to just not get out of the 'sync' screen.. and 4th so far has been stable.

so look up the reviews on that phone.

Yeah, the iphone I won't get because of issues with service in this area mainly.  I also won't pay the price and not be able to have the option to expand the memory.  16 gig is the biggest and its 300 dollars after rebate.  The instinct is 129 after rebate and has expansion capabilities.  It is more of a true media phone and plays all formats rather than Ithis or Ithat.  It doesn't have to be converted to any certain files to work in the phone, and the list goes on and on.  I will admit that the multitouch platform and the screen itself are leaps and bounds better than the competition, but the phone and features about it that I just can't handle.  If you're into the whole I everything then its great, but I don't even have an Ipod much less all the accessories and crap to go with it.  As far as the centro, now you've got me thinking of something else for her.  Maybe I'll just get her an instinct too.

I have the Palm treo 750 and have had no problems at all out of it.  It's running WM6, but shipped with WM5.  I installed the rom myself.  It has a mini sd card slot for memory expansion or you can add a mini sd wifi card.  It only has 60mb of internal memory, but I use it as a phone more than anything.  I have a few songs and videos on there, but not many.  Now, I could add a 2 gig card and add plenty of other stuff.  The biggest drawbacks to this phone for me has been the lack of built-in wifi.

That was the one big thing that sucks about both the centro and the instinct is the lack of wifi, but the rev-do (I forgot what its called) system is supposed to be really fast anyway.  As long as you're in sprint network, you can use the internet at near high speed levels.  I also like the fact that you can use the phones as an external modem for your laptop.  I wonder if they make a micro SD wifi card.

They have both mini and micro sd wifi cards.  Both are made by Spectec.

Yeah, for me its not like I need the instinct for anything I do, but for 30 bucks more a month, its pretty sweet what all it can do!
