Title: Removing top plate - ill effects?
Post by: TheTazZ on July 03, 2008, 03:34:24 PM
I'm planning on putting on clipons, and i was going to remove the top plate to make space for them.
Along came my brother - and insisted that it was a bad idea.
He claims it may influence the stability in the fork somehow  :dunno_white:
I say he's wrong.
Your opinions on this?

Tazz pay no mind to the youngster that goes by the name of mach1, he confuses sarcasm with stupity. I dont really think the top plate is as much a "stressed"member of the steering area because it is rubber mounted I believe, to quell the vibration for the instrument clustr. How will you mount the cluster once said top plate is removed? I think that is what mach1 was trying to say? :cookoo:

A few people have done it, I don't think it will cause any problems.

The mounting of gauges hasn't been decided yet.
At first, i will probably moun the cluster on a custom bracket.
The plan is to mount a koso RX1N in the top fairing once that gets on.
The only reason i posted the question is that even though im sure im right in the matter,
my brother is the type of person that can make me doubt such things...
Annoying as hell lol

ok let me be more helpfull. removing it wont do shaZam! as far as strength goes its does not come in contact with the forks but it does contact the top triple via rubber cushions. as far as your gauhes goes I had to make a custom top plate when I had my clip-ons use the stocker as a template and get yourself a small square of alluminum about an 1/8 think maybe a but more and use a hole saw to make the holes as far as the rounded edges goes I have a plasma cutter at work and a few bandsaws to do my work with.

I have no top plate and I have no problems. The top plate does nothing more than mount your bars and gauges. If it was a structural member it would clamp to the forks and not be held to the top clamp with rubber  bushings
