Title: Exhaust Question
Post by: sliceofken on July 04, 2008, 08:10:16 AM
Hi All!

New to the boards (and to gs500's in general). I recently bought an '04 gs500f private sale, but was duped into accepting it with a "doomed" exhaust since I knew nothing about bike's when I bought it. In any event I need to replace the exhaust on it, and I'm curious to see what will and what will not fit the 500f. I've found the usual answers (Jardine, Yoshi, etc.) online, but to be honest, I just want something stock and cheap to get the bike up and running again. I'm curious if a 1994 gs500e stock exhaust will fit the '04 500f (found on ebay for cheap)? And if not, can someone point me to some information about which model bikes and what years DO fit the '04 500f?

I appreciate any and all help! Thanks again!

What is a doomed exhaust?

by doomed i mean the stock exhaust was fitted with a slip on that wasn't made for the bike. during the modification by the previous owner there was a hole put in the exhaust pipe to "make it fit". I recently had the carburetor cleaned but since I didn't realize the exhaust hole until after I brought the bike in, the carb had already been cleaned and now can't be retuned to the exhaust with the hole. Long story short I need a new exhaust for as cheap as possible.

I'm looking to see if other bike models might fit the '04 gs500f (with as little modification as possible) in hopes i can find something salvaged or cheaper than the actual 500f exhaust

Try taking it to a decent exhaust shop - explain that you want it to work, not to look pretty - it should be possible to weld up a patch (or weld in a new section of pipe or adapter) that will plug the hole. Pictures of the offending parts will help us make less general suggestions.

Correct.

If you are having running issues with the bike, the previous owner may not have rejetted the bike to match the exhaust and/or air filter.Any time the exhaust or air filter is upgrade to allow for more air flow, the carbs must be rejetted to match.Serious engine damage can occur,if it runs at all.
