Title: Need a new blinker... and some advice on fixing a fairing.
Post by: kdbolt70 on July 07, 2008, 09:57:33 AM
So I did something I look back on as being somewhat stupid. My girlfriend wanted to ride my bike, which I was a bit tentative about. I tought her how to ride dirtbikes and she's now pretty good at riding, so I eventually figured it would be ok as long as she stayed in the driveway. So I suited her up in leathers and a helmet and let her go around my circle drive. Everything was going fine untill I suggested she try some harder breaking. The next lap she came around and came to a stop just fine, but didn't quite get her foot down in time. I watched as my girls took a spill right there on the asphalt. After making sure she was ok I picked the bike up to inspect the damage. I was relieved to see nothing serious was wrong, just some minor scuffs on the fairing and pipe. The only thing that was really damaged was the blinker area of the fairing. The blinker popped through its hole and cracked the plastic on its way through. Its not a very bad crack, only about an inch on either side of the hole. I tried popping the blinker back through, but it wasn't having any of that. I was thinking about getting new blinkers anyways, so I was looking for some suggestions. I'd like a shortstalk style blinker (not flushmount) with a clear lens. It'd be great if I could find ones that fit right in the stock holes, because that would alleviate any of the stress in the cracks in the fairing.

I'm also interested in some sort of adhesive that would be good for fixing the plastic. One of the cracks is under the decal so it is entirely invisible. Any thoughts?

The turn signal comes apart.  Then you can put it back in like it's supposed to, and reassemble.   As far as the crack is, you could take your fairing to a body shop and have them plastic weld the crack.  That would be the strongest fix.

Thanks for the input. I'll look at trying to take the blinker apart. I thought it might, but I couldn't find an easy way to do so. I'll check out the bodyshop thing too. I wonder what it'd cost to get it fixed up, vs getting a new fairing...

I've had very good results at fixing fairings using soldering iron and some ABS plastic, you can plastic weld the crack from the opposite

side of the fairing , ABS plastic strip in one hand ,soldering iron in the other ,you melt the plastic over the crack and spread it like butter  :)

Allright, an update to this situation. Last friday someone hit my bike while it was sitting in the parking lot. It was knocked over on the opposite side from its last fall, and got its rear fairing pretty banged up. I was pretty upset this weekend, especially that no one left a note when they hit it. Luckly after work on teusday someone did leave me a not, so I plan on calling this evening after I figure out replacement parts. Along with the fairing the blinker and mirror got scratched up as well. Both of which I plan on replacing.

So a couple questions. I'm looking on bikebandit for replacement parts, and I see part # 5169035-001 is $84.70, which is the fairing I need. However, there is a part # 5169766-001 which is the "emblem set" for $151.32. Is this the fairing plus the sticker? This is the direct link to the page I am talking about:

Secondly, I'm still in the hunt for some short stalk blinkers that fit into the front fairing holes. Has anyone tried the Lockhart-Phillips short stalks on the F? If so, any pics? I'm thinking about these guys:

I just put an order in for some new shortstock flashers... payed $110 (here in Calgary, Alberta) for them... specs were 8.5mm by 2.5mm and LED clear lens.  Pics looked awesome... I should get them by the end of the week, I'll post some pics when I put them on on Sat.  Friggen can't remember the name/brand of them.. maybe its on my invoice... sorry I'm not much help  :dunno_white:

edit:  if you want some stock flashers I'll have 4 ready for you on Sat  :icon_lol:

There are some pics here in this link  http://picasaweb.google.com/toogoofy317/Flick02 (http://picasaweb.google.com/toogoofy317/Flick02) . I hope this works if not just cut and paste this link and you will see the blinkers I have which are about the same length as yours but diamond shape. http://picasaweb.google.com/toogoofy317/Flick02

will try to find the name of the brand of blinker. Hope you get the insurance to pay for everything. Yeah decals are expensive. Same thing happened to my bike no one left a note. $700 in damage 500 deductible not going to have my insurance go up over that! so, I took off all the decals and putting my own stuff on there!
