Title: Direct replacement for a gs500 swingarm?
Post by: metalforever on July 12, 2008, 06:49:51 AM
I need a replacement swing arm for my gs within the next week, im happy to install it myself but the problem is the only gs ones i can find are either incomplete (i need the bearing/spacers from the dog bone mounting point) or are far too expensive.

Is there something like a bandit swing arm which will use the same spindles as currently in place or not?

Nothing is a direct replacement.87-89 is the closest but needs bushings made for it to work.See this link for more info. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=34776.0

Can I take a guess, did you got an MOT fail on worn suspension bearings???
If so you need 2 of these.....

or this is the same thing only cheaper

These are the exact replacements for the ones used in the linkage pivot. The  rollers are hardened and ground and an OEM part only.

Like ben says, no other swinger that fits straight in without having to manufacture and use additional parts like spacers etc. Swingers go for about £20 and upwards from the breakers dependant on condition but you are unlikely to get any guarantee the bearings and rollers are up to MOT standards.
There is a couple of swingers on the bay at the moment but at those prices the sellers must be on glue!

No MOT type checks here, but Im still having issues finding them in US besides dealer....Well no one has responded to the e-mails. I will call next week to various bearing houses.

Again, thanks sledge for the links and info.

why not... oh... go to the dealer? buying a new swingarm would cost a LOT more and be far more difficult than replacing the bearings on the swingarm you've got

Fry,
FYI this is a basic outline of the MOT test our bikes must go through for them to be legal to use on the road. Every UK bike needs a MOT certificate from the 3rd anniversary of its 1st registration, after that it needs to be renewed every year. Certain garages are equipped and registered to do the test, its takes about 30-40 Min's and costs about £25...thats 50 of your bucks!! You need to show the certificate when you pay the annual road fund license.......thats another £48 or 99 Greenbacks! If the Police catch you using the bike without a MOT its a hefty fine and endorsements on your license, have an accident and your insurance co its within its rights not to pay out. Truth is its not really difficult to keep your bike up to MOT standards and it keeps the deathtraps off the roads.

Our Inspection requirements are far less. Working Lights, Horn and Mirrors. They may look at the brakes and Chain and Sprockets, though I cannot remember, never had an issue though.

I do like a lot about you MOT standards, like you said, keeps the death traps off the road. I also like the class system for motorcycle licenses, keeps the skids, I would think, from buying 1000cc GIxxers as soon as they can sign the papers, wish we had that here.

If things keep on, the US will require everyone to take the MSF before or for there licensing.SC is already using  MSF procedures for licensing.

And though more Gvmt. interference into our life bugs me, I would support that nationally.

i think the safest solution is find a gs500 one.

Although my bearings had gone where the dog bones join up the swing arm also had a rusty hole it in when i dismantled the rear end.

Not safe, so to stop me trying to reuse this dangerous piece of equipment ive cut it in half and im going to email some breakers today.

If anyoone in the uk has a swing arm with working bearings they can sell me and get it to me withing the next 5 days that'd be great.
