Title: Pics of the "no metal fab streetfighter" RE: cleaning up rear subframe
Post by: Jackstand Johnny on July 14, 2008, 05:21:25 PM
Okay so I posted a thread asking for ways to clean up the rear subframe of my GS without doing any metal fabrication work. I'm making my 89 into a streetfighter, but I don't have the means to manipulate metal to do so. I tried to work around this by compromising for the time being, and using what I have to do it. Here's some pictures of the progress thus far. I hope you guys like it. I'm not done by a long shot, but who is when it comes to matters like this? By the way, all the modification was done with a dremel tool.

Good Job, keep up the good work...

Tonight I am working on setting up my wiring loom, and though I did extensive (For Me) work, I am trying to make it all neat, tidy and bindled togethr.

I'll post up some pics....In another thread.

I've done the same type of thing.  There's a lot of crap that can be lobbed off if you can just cut the metal.  Everything from the rear seat mount back isn't needed for support, so that can all go.  But then the taillight needs to be remounted.  You could hand bend some thinner metal (18-16 gauge or so), and make a bracket.  Also I moved my license plate and mounted it right behind the battery box, but high enough that the rear tire doesn't obstruct it.  Also I moved all the wiring and electrics to in between the lunchbox filter and the batter (make sure the stuff that has to breath has adequate room to cool).  When you move the tail light, those metal bars on the sides can go.  I also modified my seat some.  I used a dremel for most of that, so you could do that easy.  Just made it about 1-1.5" shorter, getting rid of the little flip up in the back.

Just get creative and realize that there's tons that doesn't have to be there for the bike to run, and then you'll end up cutting off or removing more and more.  It can get very simplified.  I'm going to try to get some pictures up today, so I'll link to it on this thread.  I think it's exactly what you're going for.

ps, I also cut off my rear pegs (making mounts to have them removable), but if you can cut them off, then that's another way to clean it up.

Also, removing the mud guard makes a big difference to the 'cleanness' of the back end.

BTW, I bought a piece of acrylic from home depot for the mud guard, but haven't installed it yet.

Can the rear pegs be removed without going to an aftermarket exhaust system?  If you can do that than that bike will look a lot cleaner.

You'd have to make a bracket to hold the exhaust up in the rear.  But you could do it.

Looking good, but i'd shorten those rear indicators ASAP, either that or get some new shorter ones....

Keep it up!

+1

Oh, and recover your seat if possible. It's a pretty quick and cheap job with a piece of marine-grade vinyl, a heat gun or hair dryer (with a heat setting), and a staple gun. Do a search and you'll find a How-To.

Tang, I used the factory hardware and mounting holes from the original rear inner fender. I WILL get aftermarket indicators, I WILL fix the seatm and I WILL lose those footpegs. Thanks for the input, and keep it coming!

If you remove the read pegs, where would you attach the bracket to hold up the exhaust?  You couldn't do it on the swingarm so my guess is that it would just be a smaller bracket than the one currently holding up the rear pegs...right?

I've seen some people cut off the left rear one completely, and leave one of the bars on the right one, so that the bracket is still there.  You are correct.  It has to be attached to an immobile part of the frame.

Yeah that's probably the best way, I saw one guy who had a bar running back from his heel guard.

I had thought about doing that, it just might take a while with a sawzall, :icon_mrgreen:

I cut my rear pegs with a sawsall.  Didn't take too long at all.  I did, however, use an angle grinder after to smooth it all out.
