Title: 98 Gs500 To hot?
Post by: gish1 on July 15, 2008, 09:13:20 AM
Hello.
I am the proud owner of a new to me 89 GS500e.  I am however having some trouble with the bike and need some advice.  after "searching" the forms i could not find much about my trouble and any input would be much appreciated.

The bike seems to run well. no trouble starting at all and the sound is good when its going.  however after she is going for a little while the crank case gets very hot.  hot to the point were i cant remove the dip stick cover with my bare hands.  also when driving the power is very uneven and serges and the tank vibrates a lot.  I know it is a 20 year old bike and the ride is not going to be that smooth and there is more then likely more then one issue causing these things  but any advice on what to check first would be great.

thanks

you can't touch the dip stick on a proper running motor.  i would say if it jumpy and not running smooth pull and clean the carbs realy good then see what happens.  if you got a Temp gun see what the motor is at but i don't think not being able to touch it is somthing to base that off of

The heat doesn't sound off.  For the poor running, check your jetting and check your valves - things you want to do for any used bike of uncertain history anyway. ;)

thanks for all the quick replys.

So i guess i will not worry about the heat, i had not idea that it should be that hot.  I have always owned dirt bikes with plastic oil caps so it seems wrong to me.  ;o)

i hope to tear her down this weekend and do a full maintenance if i get time.

Ill let you know how it goes.

thanks again!!!

The honda I have had had a plastic oil cap, and it was low down in the case, plastic will not melt at the temperature of a GS. Go ahead put the oil cap off your dirt bike on it.
The GS will run 220 -250 F or so oil temp, and plastic wont melt till 400+.
Cool.
