Given that you cannot even see the plate, no. I'm fairly sure that a lot of similar stuff that HaHaIlfornian's appear to get away (no idea if it's technically legal there, but one sees pictures and assume that they bike in question are at least not being pulled over on a daily basis) with would not fly here (taxachusetts, neuvo yawk, and/or the full vermonty), either, but I don't really know for sure, as I would not even be tempted to try it.
Tang, that aint gonna fly down dar in da low contry.
Here's where I stuck mine...

I even reused the original bracket. Just flipped it around. and mounted the plate to the back of it.

Mine, is hung directly where the rear fender WAS, I just used some aluminum bar stock and bolted the biatch in. zero issues whatsoever.
This is where mine is mounted. It's on the back side of the battery box. It's easily seen from the rear. If a car was 20 feet back from me, they'd have no idea that it was set in at all.
Hopefully you can get a good view of this. These are the only pics I could find of it. You can see that it's at an angle. It won't hit the rear tire on full compression either. You do have to remove the stock mud guard for this though, but it looks exactly what you were wanting to do. I've never been pulled over and I've had it like this for a couple months now. I don't even think they'd be concerned about it because it is really visible.

I kinda wonder how visible it really is with you actually riding the bike. The bottom is about level with the top of the tire as is, and when the suspension compresses a bit (as you sit on the bike) you'd start losing visibility.
ive know people who put them there. uncompressed CLEARLY visable, but after having a rider on it, got a ticket for guess what? " not visable". they go to court, judge goes to see bike, ( without rider) and case is dismissed, cause its visible, later on that month, they get ticketed again, they do the same thing again, and same thing happens again. heh the cops gave up
I still don't even display my tag and get very little grief about it.
I've seen some on the chain guard too. Mine's just in the standard spot though.
This is where I put mine.

I think duck taped to the grab bar would look cool!
Yeah, it's about even with the top of the tire, but I have a Katana 600 shock on setting 4, so it doesn't compress that much, and I only weight about 145, so maybe about 1/2" or so. It's visible when I'm on it, so it works for me.
You could also mount it in place of the taillight and mount that around the shock as the redlight would still be visiible. I liked the idea of stuck to the back of the helmet lol. You could mount it to right or left of the swingarm (more seen on cruisers and customs)
I wonder if you would be allowed to mount it on the front where they always used to be mounted. Interesthing thought. Obviously not the same orientation at first or they will get banned for the same reason they did when they were first put like that.
I bought an axle/chain guard mount for the project GS.. Ill post some pics if I ever put it back together :icon_mrgreen:
