Title: $600 worth of issues. Plus fun new ones! With pics.
Post by: Agno on July 25, 2008, 08:50:05 AM
OK. So I picked up a GS from a friend of a friend for $600.  Was running and was told that it had recently had some work done.

Everything was going well enough.  Only issues were a rapidly stretching chain and some Idle hovering that I was trying to figure out.

That is until I slid the poor thing down a gravel strewn alley.

The stator cover took the brunt of it.  Most everything else seems to be ok.  Well, I got a replacement cover for it but when I took the gnarled one off I noticed this.

Almost all of the epoxy has chipped away and was all over inside the stator housing.  It did'nt seem to be having charging problems or anything, I am just worried that this may be a symptom of some rapidly approaching problem.

Should I just put on the new stator cover and be on my merry way or is there more work to be done?

p.s.   Sorry for the dark pics.  I cant seem to get it any lighter with my camera.

Do a forum search for "goats".  Bad, bad stuff could happen if a magnet frags on you.

I agree with Juan1. Several people on the board have had this same problem; fix it before it makes things worse!

note: FYI - goat was the first member to document the problem of damaged stator magnets - that's why it's commonly referred to as "goat's syndrome"

So the safe and prudent thing to do would be to replace the entire rotor that holds the magnets?

And another quick question, my bike has factory clip-ons.  It is listed on the title as a 92.  92 should have a handle bar correct?

Where is the production sticker on this bike?  Might be an 89' or might have had bars replaced with clip-ons.  Just curious.

Prob. someone changed the bars.. the Manufacture date is on a metal plate on the left side top of the frame near the tank

yes, it is gone and I see the bolts starting to chip out too. Do not ride it until you fix it. Else instead of a $100 damage, it will be a $400 damage  :nono:

In light of the nature of the accident I would be checking the flywheel and crank end for run-out, taking 0.02mm as a max......but in saying that, not everyone has a DTI and if something is bent you will soon find out when you fire it up

So you want to know what year it is?....look at your frame number. It will read: TS1GM51A????????etc. The letter that immediately follows the A indicates its year.
1989-K
1990-L
1991-M
1992-N
etc

(According to the Haynes manual    :dunno_white:)

At first glance it seems like bad luck you dropped it on the gravel. Luckilyy you did drop it and found out you had GOATS before you killed the engine.   :thumb:

Offhand I'd say the drop probably CAUSED the Goat's, in this case.

well, were there any traces of magnetic pieces on the damaged case/cover? :dunno_white:, but yes. GOATS developing do NOT ride it until repaired :nono:

Nope.  no evidence of magnetic fragments.  Just some oil that was past due for an oil change and those epoxy chips.  Guess its time to look into getting a replacement rotor and starting the process of removing the old one.  As far as I've read it can be  serious pain in the a$$ to get the thing off.

Just thought I'd update this old thread and ask a couple new questions.

-Replaced rotor and Magneto cover

-Removed carbs.  Cleaned/inspected them using the Clymer manual as a guide.  Also removed and cleaned Petcock.  To my very untrained eye both seemed to be assembled correctly and were missing no parts.

-Looks like there are two added washers on my needle.  Left those there.(the exhaust has been drilled. not sure if that makes a difference.)

-Replaced Battery and added new gas.  She fired up with quite a bit of smoke.  Also needed a large adjustment to the idle screw in order to stay running without choke.

-Gently rode around the block.  She exhibited the same severe idle hovering as before.  Idles fine as long as I use zero throttle.  at 1% throttle the revs shoot to about 5500 and stay there until I drag it back down using the clutch and do not touch the throttle

-Eventually just dies.  Feels like I'm running out of gas.  Seems not to matter which way the petcock is pointing.  Tried PRI and ON.  Same results.

-That was all a week ago.  Tried unsuccessfully to start er' up today.  Just seems like she's not getting fuel.

Not sure what to do now.  I intended to go down the "idle hovering troubleshooting" list tonight.  Just feel like I'm moving backwards here and trying to keep from getting too frustrated.

Anyone have any thoughts on which direction to go now?

The washers are probably needed to compensate for the additional airflow resulting from the drilled exhaust. Buddha will be able to give you some advice on whether or not two washers are appropriate.

As for the hanging idle, the FAQ thread you mentioned is a very good place to start. In your case, it is especially possible that you missed those tiny little o-rings in the top of the carbs when you reassembled the carbs.

You should also confirm that you have a few mm freeplay in the throttle cable.

Made sure that the mini o-rings were intact.  The throttle cable has plenty of slack and does not feel like its sticking.

Any more suggestions?

The first things that come to my mind, not checking the FAQ so forgive any obvious answers, is to check the valves if they are anywhere close and balance the carbs.

carb synch and check your petcock. those frame mounted ones are problematic as I recall.
