Title: 4 days..........
Post by: spc on July 26, 2008, 06:52:23 PM
I gave up caffeine 4 days ago.  The first day sucked massive donkey balls.  I was convinced that I would end up cutting someone's throat.  Past that it hasn't been bad.   I actually feel a lot better in general.
It's time to get back in to shape.  I stocked up on good ol' protein mix and hit the new gym tomorrow.   I don't know the specifics about why caffeine inhibits your body's ability to properly utilize protein, but it does.  I'm sure RG has some insight on why.  The Marine Recruiter is going apeshit trying to find my 214. (VA doesn't have it, St. Louis has a backlog and the state is being uncooperative) :icon_rolleyes:  But, I'm sure it will all be squared away by the time frame I gave to ship.

Nice, it's always good to see people getting healthy. I used to drink caffeine like it was my job, but I gave it up, and haven't had a drop in almost a year. I really don't have a desire to drink it. Last year I did what you are now doing and haven't looked back since, I couldn't be happier. Keep it up.  :thumb:

I drink way too much coffee.  I believe I suffer from sleep apnea and I never really feel rested so I'm always looking for a pick-me-up.  I've tried to at least make my coffee an afternoon thing, though.  I try not to drink it first thing in the morning because I don't want to have a withdrawal headache before I can even make it to noon.  It would probably do me well to give it up all together, but my energy level is always low.  I definitely need to get back into exercising!

I cold-turkeyed for two weeks (didn't even drink decaf, avoided other sources, etc), didn't find any improvement, and went back to my usual 3 mugs of half-caf. YMMV. took about 4 days for the withdrawal pangs to go away, but I never felt like I was all awake, alert, and sharp in my new caffeine-free lifestyle, even 10 days after any physical crap (headaches, etc.) was over with.

Therefore:

Vices remain unchanged. Beats the heck out of smoking.

Different physiology for different people, but 3 cups of half caf isn't really that bad.  I had days where my intake could be measured in gallons I'm pretty sure
It's hard to associate specific points to just the caffeine as I quit the caffeine, quadrupled my water intake and cut the crap out of my diet in the same day.  Between those 3 things I've felt freaking great.
You know, it's crazy, I can actually hear the cadences from Pariss Island in the morning if I'm out on the beach and something about that seems to just be luring me in.  They've got another thing coming if they think their training is going to phase me.  By my plan I'll be more than ready physically and short of ORS I doubt there's anything psychologically that could really get to me.
Night y'all.

Coffee has been shown to at least have some health benefits.  This is not to say that I think it's all good, but in moderation, I'm sure it's fine.  Smoking on the other hand--can't think of one good thing THAT does for the body.

I hate to see people that suffer from that addiction.  I'm sure it must have a powerful grip--otherwise more people would succeed in quiting.  Besides that, it's an expensive habit!  Good luck kicking it if/when you try!

Have a friend that works at a hospital.  They made the entire CAMPUS smokefree if I remember right.  Guy could have got his wife free patches (or at least the gum), but she wouldn't use them.... :dunno_white: :cookoo:

Smokers have a lower incidence of colorectal aneurysms. They actually prescribe nicotine patches to non-smokers for this problem.

I had a caffeine headache and felt like hell for a week when I was in reception. It went away the morning we went to our basic training units. Of course after IET was over I went back to my old ways. Funny thing is I don't even drink coffee, I just chug sweet tea by the pitcher.  I quit caffeine years later be choice so I wouldn't have to go through it again if and when I had to deploy.

I was never really bad with the caffeine until after IET............then it just went off, then I stopped for a while when I started lifting seriously.  College kinda brought back the old ways and now they're gone again.  I just got to work after a rather nice session at the gym and aside from some bone-related pain in my thumb, I fell absolutely great.

Good to know!  Though I don't think I'll start a cigarette regimen anytime soon.  It seems that some people can get away with smoking all the way through a long life, while others suffer consequences at a much younger age.

When I was in there was a 3 strikes rule, is it still around? (fail 3 in a row and your ass is on the street)  APFT isn't all that bad to just pass, I usually got around 65-70 on the run and 80-90 on PU and SU.  (yeah, I hate running and it hates me back)   The freakin Marine PT test is a whole different ball game, doesn't particularly look harder though aside from the run being 3 miles.

APFT is bullshit for old men, probably something ridiculous like 18 minutes for the run (2 miles) 26 pushups and 30 situps.

Still no caffeine, loving being back at the gym, no word on my 214  :icon_rolleyes: blah blah blah
Oh, yeah, @$$hole 'physical trainer' came over to me the other day and told me I 'was doing it wrong' so I walked over to the leg press rig and racked 16 plates, belted out 5 reps and asked him to show me how to do that right.  That shut his scrawny Buddha Loves You ass up pretty well.  They've got Tai Chi at 0500 every morning M-F that I'm thinking about doing, If I don't find something to help calm me down I'm going to end up knocking someone out in a wal-mart parking lot

Yeah, in moderation it's ok, I was way the f%$k past what they called acceptable.  I finally looked up the exact reason caffeine is bad for my goals: It inhibits the body's ability to produce and utilize creatine.  I don't take a creatine supplement as any more than your body produces is generally just flushed out or stored.  Also, most size gains made while taking creatine diminish when you stop taking it.

OK, so I was at the gym today doing light shoulder work and moderate leg work (it was supposed to be an off day) and this dude walks up to the bar I had set-up for shrugs like he's going to knock out a few sets.  I've got double plates and 15's on each side, so 275lbs.  He struggles a little with his grip so I offer him my lift straps as I'm heading to the leg press.  He declines and seconds later I hear a huge crashing :icon_rolleyes:  f%$king Jackass dropped the bar.  About 15 minutes later I'm done with a cycle on the leg press and move back to my shrug bar leaving the plates on the leg press.   He heads over to the leg press which had 6 plates each side, so 540lbs knocks out 1 very shaky rep and his legs give out.  He broke his nose and knocked a tooth out with his knee.  The gym revoked his membership and the paramedics laughed like hell when they heard what happened.    f%$king arrogant prick needs to stay on his totalgym at home.
