Title: I am now in sacramento. Bike & drive report...
Post by: TheGoodGuy on September 04, 2003, 09:59:14 AM
I got here on sunday evening. I rode the gs all the way up doing about 90mph at almost all times on solid ground. On the grapevine i did about 80mph.

The bike ran good, but the vibrations were there. THe vibes were gone when i kept it at 70-75 mph, but i idndt ride at that speed and hence i got a whoe lot of vibes. But the good thing is that the bike is running a bit smoother.. i must have broken something in.

Anyway I put in 1/2 a qt when I left LA, it was at L on the dip stick and then when I reached here I noticed it was aback at L. I am not burning oil (my brother was behind min the car all times and he didnt see blue smoke). I wonder if the ign.advancer is doing that? When i arrived the bike was runnin greallly hot and it stalled at the light, so there is somewhere a problem.

Either that or my oil measuring way is screwed up. Why would it go thru that much at 7K mils on the clock. Well I got 7600 now. Its time for an oilchange again in a few weeks.

The idie is set at 1300 and its a tad high but its running good. I have no complaints, and teh vibration is much reduced (thanks to paul and james).

Otherwise I got a few issues with the progressives i tihnk. I heard some squeaks this morning while I was going around a turn, it sounded like it came from up front. I will have to doiuble check.

Also my rear tyre has these 3 gashes (not deep but its there).. its sorta like a razor blade kinda mark. Its on the center of the tread. I know i have to replace the tyre, and i will start looking for good prices on BT45's, but i wish i could run say another 1000 miles on the stockers.

I live about 10-13 miles from campus, so its quite a ride on the streets of sacramento. The trouble of bringing the bike to school paid for itself yesterday and today. I actually got to school on time by lane splitting my way in.

Anyway my computer (laptop) took a dump so I am stuck using the univ computing resources with a 20 minute time frame. I dont know what else to do. I hope I can get a new machine by the weekend. I hate it that my USB and PCMCIA ports are dead. I dont think Dell sells a replacement part, but i will call them and see if I can figure things out.

Its an older machine so i could use an upgrade.

anyway more later..

My GS uses oil (no smoke) when running highway speeds for an extended time.  Before and after the advancer.  It's the constant speed and RPM's, not the advancer.

Same here. I have learnt that I have to check the oil after riding at highway speed for a while. I think most of it comes out of the blow-by tube on the right side of the engine.

that would explain why i saw a few drops on the floor after i stopped the bike when i arrived at sacramento.

Im going to keep an eye on it for sure..

weather... worse than LA.. I will take LA's 365 day riding weather any day.

Its been HOT here, today was one of the cooler days (with yesterday). This evening has been the first cool evening I have seen in a week.

The road trip was hell but oh welll the weather here was even worse.. tempratures are weird here.

Give me LA any day.

careful, east coasters might hear you complaining about the sac weather....

Good you made it. Mine burns oil-I've been told by riders behind me that it puffs cloud of blue on decel but havent really noticed a BIG oil usage. Actually dont use any more than I used to before advancer either. Bike has 5600 miles of mostly pretty hard miles.

this weather isn't typical of sacramento... this whole year has been really weird... hot one day, cold and raining the next, etc... normally its just hot hot hot this time of year.

Glad you made it there safely, but did you enjoy the ride?

Yeah, this year's weather has been strange..  Normally it's just 105 for 30 days in a row.

Hope you like Sac state.  That's where you're going, right?

Switching back and forth between lanes makes you more noticable, too.

Just one thing - there isn't a "blow-by tube" on the right side of the engine. The crankase breather is on the very top of the engine in the center, above the valve cover. It normally feeds into the airbox, and any oil should be sucked in and burned in the engine.

Oil drops on the right side are leaking from somewhere.

Puffs of smoke on deceleration are typically a valve seal problem.

Kevin, on the right side there is the breather hose that comes from the airbox. Oil that deposits on the bottom of the airbox flows out from there. It's the one with the nipple (for lack of better words) on the tip. You may not have it if you ditched the airbox.

Oh yeah, that is the airbox drain. I was thinking that is more at the rear of the engine. Not much oil should come out ot there.
