I go by milage but I ran out of gas two days ago in the middle of no where. Res tank saved me, but how do you do it?
I just figure out how many miles i get before i have to switch on to reserve, and try to get gas like 10 or so miles before that.
I usually either anticipate hitting reserve by mileage or actually hit reserve then go find a gas station. My commute is only 7 to 10 miles through LA though so I'm usually not going too far and I'm never far from a gas station...
In Southend , i dont think ur ever more than 8 miles from a petrol station ,

I am running on RES all the time as my fuel tap is messed up, so I just fill up every 100 to 110 miles. No problems so far.
I'm also running on reserve because something is funny with my vaccumes or something.. When my trip says 210 miles then I go fill her up at the nearest station
I set the odometer to 0.When I hit 100 I tank up.... :cheers:
ya i have never gone below half tank really at about 120-150 i fill enless i know im going out for a long ride
I always reset my tripmeter at each fuel-up :thumb:. I typically expect to hit reserve 200 - 210 miles. When she starts to burble, I switch to reserve. I've got to stop for fuel w/in the next 50 miles.... i'll sometimes stop shortly after I switch to reserve, but sometimes go 30-40 miles more if I want to stop at a favorite station (I really like the way she runs on Sunoco 91 octane). I commute 70 miles round-trip each day.

I go by mileage. I fill her up around 180 miles. I think I ran out once around 185.
I always go by milage on the bike. 150 miles @ fill-up with a little left, it sucks to run out. In my truck, I try not to let it get below 1/4 tank because it makes the fuel pump struggle to push fuel that is not there and adds excess wear to the pump....i.e. replace sooner. The carbs do all the suction via the diaphragms to act as a fuel pump, so i dont think this is an issue with the GS. I just know it sucks to run out of fuel reserve and all !!!!!!!!! Have a back-up person to call with a spare can to bring or get tripple a(AAA), it will save you even if its not just fuel. :icon_lol:

I get 57-63 MPG(according to the bike odo) and usually fill up at about 160 because I go 80 miles a day commuting and I'll hit reserve if I go to 3 days and I don't like that idea. I've gone over the reserve once but I switched the switch over before I left. Beyond that once I've never gone into the reserve.
No reserve here, if I'm out I'm out. I religiously fill to the bottom of the filler neck and plan to fill up at 150 miles. I've gone as far as 180 miles, but that was pushing my luck.
I've found my GS gets right at 50MPG, no matter how I ride it.
Mine seems to get the 57-63 no matter what I do either, city, free way, gentle, playing acceleration man every intersection. always the same. I think it's more not filling it to exactly the same spot and less actually doing anything different.
Fill it up, set odometer to zero and set fuel tap to RES. Ride it till it stops. Thats about as far as its going to go on a tank. If you put a gallon can of fuel in your backpack first, you don't even have to push it to fill up again. :thumb:
IF I remember to reset the odometer I go about 180 miles between filll ups. I haven't gone on reserve yet so I don't know how many miles I can go on a tank of gas.

That's what reserve is for, if you have it (working). Not a sin to use it, so long as you don't forget that you are on reserve and really run out of gas. :oops:
Typically both prongs of mileage (reset trip at each fill up) and reserve - when it's convenient and isn't some absurdly small amount to pump, fill up. It's a good thing to to run to reserve on a somewhat regular basis if reserve works, simply to verify where that is likely to hit, if say, you take a long trip and don't want to stop for gas too often - but also don't want to bypass the last station for 50 miles if you're close to reserve.
You might have some engine issue sucking down your mileage (valve adjustment, etc) and in this slimy day and age, you might also have a gas thief, though in that case you might expect not to have any reserve. Or it may just be riding style (highway .vs. city, "spirited" .vs. conservative"). Could also be evaporating if it's sitting in the hot sun for long periods.
