Title: Is it an Electrical problem???
Post by: substudio on August 05, 2008, 12:59:56 PM
Hello all.

I recently took my GS around town and left it overnight at my friends house.

When I returned the next day to take it home I realized that the battery was dead.
I did place the steering lock on so I assumed it was my fault for leaving the tail light on overnight thus draining the battery.

The neighbor had a battery charger and offered to charge my battery just enough to give it a jump start which worked.
I tried taking it home but since I am a noob rider I opted not riding it home at night.

When I returned the next day the bike would only start up and shut right off.

Since the bike had been parked at the edge of the parking lot next to the lawn it did catch some over spray from the water sprinklers on the right side.
Could this be the culprit of the bike not wanting to start?

I assumed it was an electrical short.
But before I came to that conclusion I took a look at the carbs and fuel line and checked for spark.
Everything thing seemed fine in those areas.

I then looked to see if there was a short on the right hand switches and sprayed them with Elecrtonic Parts cleaner.

I even tried it with a new battery.

Any clues on what I can try next.

It starts up fine then half a second later shuts off, then refuses to start up again until the next day. All it does is turnover when I try to start it.

Tell us about your starting technique: How much throttle, how much choke, temperature.

Make sure the plugs and leads are dry, switch petcock to PRI in case your starting attempts used all the fuel in the carbs, but it hasn't run enough to get enough vacuum to refill them.

Maybe drain the carbs. Check for fuel flow.

well, i cleaned out the carbs and replaced the spark plugs even though they looked okay.

I've tried running it with full choke and later with full throttle.

tried it in run, reserve, and prime and no dice  :dunno_white:

i'm no expert (which I'm sure you'll understand in a few moments  :cookoo:)

but it sounds like a fuel issue to me.

Don't overlook the small things... its often something stupidly simple...

ie...

Fuel Line turned off?
Hose disconnected?
leaky hose?
choke disconnected/broken/etc?
Idle adjusted too low?

etc etc etc

The fuel lines are fine.
And I don't see any leaks.

But I'll check the choke to see if it's disconnected or broken.
The Idle was a bit low.

So I'll check those two items.

hook it up to a car battery (jumper cables)

and see if it'll run and stay running..

if so get a new battery... should be around 40$ USD

So the R/H side got drenched eh?.....I would pull the cover off the ignition pickups and make sure everything in there is bone-dry. Granted there should be a seal on the cover but we dont know if some Muppet has left it off in the past.

Good Idea!!

I think I'll try that tonight.

sorry i've been out of town.

road trip to idaho....

So, I cleaned the pick ups a bit by spraying some self drying electronic parts cleaner.

I did discover some gunk inside the cover and proceeded to clean off what I can see.

And what duyya know...
It fired up!!
Yay

I let it warm up for a while.
Then, I revved it up a bit in different rpms and it shut off again.

I think I know what I have to work with and I think I'll clean it up some more.
