Title: Good deal?
Post by: unr.grad on August 06, 2008, 10:09:37 AM
Test rode one yesterday, i love how they handle.  But this one needed a bit of work, let me know what you think on its price:

it was a '90 with 37k miles, rebuilt carbs, new battery, redone seat, almost bald tires, missing right faring and little rear piece, paint is terrible, it's been down, slight oil leak, no mirrors, all the plastics are oxidised, rust spots, more little things that would need fixing.  He wants 1,000 what do you think?

the pic makes it look better cosmetically than it really is...

Hmmm.....I only paid $300 for my '90 GS500, although my list of repairs included:
rebuilding the carbs, new fork seals, new battery, tank relining, new brake pads (front and rear), new fuel and vacuum lines, new plugs, new paint, new chain and sprockets, and new tires (front and rear).

sounds to me like a bit overpriced...

I paid about that much for a '90 with really no problems other than a scratched clutch cover and no speedo cable.

I'd say it wouldn't be worth it.   Unless you plan on turning it into a streetfighter or something or you've got money to burn.

Sounds like the problems that exist aren't of the cheap variety.   O0

I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it.

i agree for that bike with all that you would have to do to it to get it lookin decent its not worth more than 500 and thats probably being generous

yeah, $1k sounds a little much.  I bought a 97 w/7k mi. for the same price that only needed carbs cleaned, new battery, and a valve job....all relatively easy to do.  I'd say pass.

WOW.....that's exactly what my bike looked like when I first got it in "98. Boy have the looks changed since then. I would offer 3 and probably wouldn t go any higher than 5.

I paid $1000 for a '90 with brand new tires, all the plastic (albeit slightly scratched under a paintjob I don't love), forks that don't leak, mirrors, etc.

While I have uncovered a few  :cookoo: bits since (severely worn front sprocket, totally backwards gas lines, missing drain lines) it was ridable from day one.

Too much for a ratty basket case. If the parts you can see are in that shape, what love has the engine had in places you can't see?

Keep your eye on craigslist.  That's where I got both of mine from at good deals.
