Title: What Tire do you recommend?
Post by: stormchaser on August 10, 2008, 02:06:06 PM
Have a 1990 GS500E been commuting to work now about 100 mi a day, mostly
freeway. Average 75 mph - 90 mph. Rear tire needs to be changed. Wondering
what tire u recommend resonable price, good all around tire. Long lasting tire.
Occasionally take on the mountain roads. Appreciate any suggestions.

20 views and no replies???

I think Ill go ahead and speak for EVERYONE and recommend Pirellii Sport Demons, which, translated literally, means "peg sliders" .. I went from stock tires to these and it felt like a brand new bike. In fact, my confidence is a little much and my chicken strip is just about out of tire.

I've put about 3,500 miles on them and I still have the little fun bags on them from when they were new (albeit not all of them)...Tred looks like I only wore out a 1/32 of an inch and if you shop around they will be only $10-20 more than the crappleaxes

Depends on your usage, there are many good choices.  I've tried a lot of them.  If you did mostly spirited riding in the twisties the Demons or even Pilot Power ss radials would be a good choice, but for your everyday commuting with occasional mountain twisties it would be hard to beat the Avon Roadriders for value.  I'm running them now and it looks like I'll get 13-14k miles from them, have about 9k 0n the rear so far.  Son JP used them and got 13k from the rear with much freeway commuting, he's putting on another of the same.

I've got 12-14k miles from the sport touring radials and as little as 5-10k miles from bias tires on the GS but the sport touring radials cost $30-50 a tire more than the Roadriders.

Not quite equal to the radials or the good Metz Lasertecs I've used for example but close enough considering the cost and my current usage.  Here's a pic I found on Google of a rear Roadrider that's done some nice cornering, at age 76 my chicken strips are a bit wider.

Thanks for the advice, sounds like roadriders are the way to go. Going to order
a rear from southwest moto. I saw some people with 140/70 and some with 130/70
Which is better? And my front dunlop is good. Should I buy a set front and rear
or does that make any real difference?

What model Dunlop tire do you have on the front?  What size?  You get free shipping from Southwest if you buy a pair.  Is front close to worn out?

Either the 130/70 or 140/70 Roadrider will work OK, you probably can't tell the difference.  I like/have the 140/70, a little more load capacity and it's sized for a 3 3/4" wheel making it an equally good fit on either the 3.5" or 4.0" wheels.  140/70 tires used to be sized for 4.0" wheels.  We have 3.5" rear wheels if stock oem.
