So I've just completed my rebuild of my 89, complete with successful carb cleaning (at least from my perspective). The bike has way more power than I remember from when I stored it, but only at idle (which is now smooth, instead of failing to stall) and at very open throttle. The problem I currently have is in mid-rpm range, it really wants to stall, and surges badly. I'm thinking that I've got a float height issue, but I need help, my test rides were not fun, I really thought I might get hurt, downshifting through was almost impossible, had to keep the clutch in and brake.
Any ideas?
I hate carbs, it's like trying to tune a chicken.
Simple option, since you hate them and they probably sense that - send to Buddha and have him do them. A few days, a few bucks, done.
Otherwise, grab some 1/8 ID hose and put it on the carb drains to check float height as installed. Then pull and adjust as needed, post pictures, check over the jets and passages, o-rings, etc.
I had Buddha offer already, trouble is that I am compulsive, and I absolutly have to do this myself. I'm sensing that I might be onto something with the float height assumption?
The tube method is simple genius too, by the way, I don't know why I didn't think of that. I guess I could check my manual but what is the proper height? Buddha?
OK so what did you screw up ... I am guessing somehting in the slides, not neccesarily float heights ... though if you did screw it up bad enough, it can be.
Floats need to be at the top of the bowl +- 1mm. Miss by over 4 mm and you might as well be talking greek to your fine japaneese speaking motor.
Cool.
Buddha.
Welll we haven't determined a screw up necessarially, heck I'm happy that it went as well as it did really. It's interesting that you suspect the slides though, I remeber commenting about a very shiny spot on one of the needles, looked spotless compared to the rest, like it had been rubbing. So, think I should pop off the tops first and check the health of the slides? I REALLY appreciate your help by the way, I'm a knowledge hog, and I only ask the best!
WAIT! Buddha, you in Charlotte?! Perhaps I can set up a apprentiship given you're just down the road a bit.
