Title: Kat 600 Vs. the Sv650 Shock
Post by: dgo99gs500e on August 19, 2008, 10:36:35 AM
ok once and for all can some one tell me what is the advantage of the sv650 shock upgrade i have done the search looked at the wiki and Pablo's page and it has left me confused.

1 i know it will raise the bike 2 in in the rear. is that a problem can you leave it raised with a modified side stand?  or do you have to modify it so it does not affect the cornering of the bike like modify the flange on the shock and re drill the holes. or modify the dog bones.

2 the kat 600 shock is the better replacement with no modification like the sv shock so why would you go through moding the sv shock or the dog bones? if there is no advantage.

3 is the kat 600 shock adjustable like the stock gs shock

thanks for helping me get this straight and i know this has been beat to death. but i am just confused and don't want to get the wrong thing on my bike.

Sv and GS and the B6 shocks are the same level of adjustability. Only preload. The SV and B6 shocks have better springs and somewhat beefier fluid columns than a GS. SV shock has to be cut and drilled and what not and still can be too tall. B6 shock does not need any of those and usually wont be too crazy tall just standing on side stand. Load it up and it will be taller than a GS, much like an SV.

Why do people use SV shocks ... No idea, I have never used it, I have never suggested to people to use it and usually try to suggest stuff only after they ahve done this or that and its done this or that.

Kat shocks - 89-98 600/750 - whole different animal. Its got the same beefy body, same better spring etc etc ... but will fit without much mod and give you a rebound adjustment in addition to spring preload. No mods usually needed, but if you get a short clevise one, and are fitting it on a GS with a steel linkage, you may have to shave the linkage a little. It has 2 adjustments.

Maybe Pablo document need to be updated.

98+ Kat 600 shock. same as 89-98 + remote gas charged reservoir with compression adjustement. so its got 3 adjustments in all.

IMHO ... going through the pain, purchase and the fiddling required with any of these, I'd rather pay the extra $$ ... or in some cases the older kat shocks sell for less ... 89-98 kat shocks are my minimum benchmark for this. I will not touch an SV shock if one flew off the SV running down the road and fell into my bike ... OK fine I will ... but ... not otherwise.

Cool.
Buddha.

Thanks for the quick reply and the clarification so pretty much any kat shock will work with my 99 all i will have to do is grind a bit off of the linkage if it is a short clevis one.  how do you tell the difference between a short clevis one and a regular one thanks again
