I was just wondering - what good would fenderectomy do, when my licence plate is almost the same size as the fender...
Since our laws don't allow drilling holes in the plates, I must use a frame, which brings the width to the exact width of the fender and the lenght only 10-15mm shorter than the fender.
I also don't want to ride around without the plate - this would get too expensive. :)
So - why would I do the fenderectomy?
I do like the way the bike looks without that fender, but where would I put the plate?
D.
Where are you from?
To perform a GS500e Fenderectomy(R), you simply cut the fender horizontally at the bottom of the license plate. In other words you leave that little rubber bumper for the plate intact. Then you just artfully sculpt the side curves so that they look a little more svelte. All this is more than simple with a Dremel tool and cut-off wheel. If you are at all squeamish about cutting your fender, just get a used one, cut it, and swap it onto the bike (takes about three minutes -- five bolts plus you have to reconnect your turn signals.
hehe... i got my tags on friday. put them on and went straight for the jigsaw. no more ugly fender :) took me all of 30 seconds.

It will make your motorcycle look a lot better
Just do it, but do it right

I heard rumor that Pablo also has a second stock fender that he slips on when no one is around. He only dawns the cut fender when GStwin members may see his bike.
Come out of the closet Pablo!
I had the same issue, but did the fenderectomy anyhow. It does look a bit funny with the plate holder hanging down behind the rear tire, but it looks about 1000 times better than the sun-scorched-white/black fender I started with. I think next time I get an inspection, I am going to get the sticker put on the rear swingarm. I have seen some GSXRs with them there, so they don't have to use one of those plastic square plate holders for the sticker. Anyhow, I highly recommend doing the cut anyhow, you will be pleased with the results. Also, the turn signal stock reduction really cleans up the rear end.
how did you know?
bastard.
I have a 10" extender on my stock one...cant be too careful.
In the UK they sell (illegal) small plates to replace the dinner plates they have.
I've been warming up the dremmel for surgery on my fender, but I keep chickening out from paranoia that it will somhow cause me to fail inspection. (this from the state that just repealed its helmet law and allegedly doesn't require signal lamps  ) anybody in the know about PA regs for passing a bike inspection?

a carton of smokes and bottle of crown royal will do wonders in many instances

Cutting the fender makes a huge difference then the signals are too long so you get shorter ones, then the signals arent bright enough so you have to put aluminum foil behind the bulbs to increase the reflectiveness, then the rear end looks plain and needs to be more bulgy so you look into a R1/R6 tail, then you have to make your own seat, then the color of your bike doesnt look right so you have to repaint it.
This is of course after lots of other things like the front fork springs and air filter and rear shock and windscreen and dual headlights.
But its fun!
didnt cut mine. since im always riding with my dad we just picked up some reflectors from Autozone and put them on it. sorry (Pantablo) but i cant cut it off right now.
I put my bike on the dyno today.
I tested it first with a stock fender and then with a cut fender.
The bike accually gained 1.5 HP's

In that case I'll cut it off... 1.5 HP is certainly worth it! :)

WHAT!? Now you tell me!?I thought cutting off more (the seat, the subframe) would give more HP so I decided to cut the seat too - left just enough for my butt (I have seen people do that and call their bikes
streetfighters - I just couldn't figure out their reasons)... Then I went for a test ride and couldn't feel any difference (apart from falling off and occasionally sitting on the rear wheel - note that the wheel isn't very comfortable) so I thought I cut too much! :nono:
;)

LMAO
You know, I thinik your on to something here. In my case, I could just cut some of my ass off. That should add 3 or 4 HPs'
You guys are nuts!
Now OFF with that fender!!! :o

Hehe, not sure about the HPs, but in my case that would be a massive weight reduction!

PS: Here is a pic of my bike. Unfotunately, the lovely, loud and HP adding Wings exhaust is gone due to a friend of mine trashing it along with right engine cover... It's back to stock for now.
bunch of bozos...
back to the subject at hand...that damn fender:
here's a lovely tail done by Lev, fellow UK rider.

Note the use of the dinner plate license...and still attractive.
