Title: Height Required to do forks?
Post by: lowcountrygs on August 19, 2008, 07:45:23 PM
About to tackle my front forks but before I tear them apart I want to make sure I have enough room underneath them. I was thinking of putting the bike on the center stand with the front forks hanging off the curb that is about 4.5" then if necessary using a board or something under the center stand for a couple extra inches. Do you guys think this would be enough?

Are you saying that you plan to prop the front forks on the curb? Once you open up the forks, they will collapse and be unable to support any weight.

Here is a thread from scratch showing a convenient method for supporting the bike:

I guess i left a couple of things unclear. I was thinking of having the front forks in the air by putting something heavy on the rear ( or maybe the method suggested above) then letting the forks hang over the edge of the curb with the rest of the bike on the curb to get a few more inches to room to remove the outer part of the forks.

I'd suggest put something heavy on the rear seat, remove front wheel and mudguard, remove forks from triple clamps. Much easier to dismantle forkswhen they're off the bike. There's plenty of clearance to pull the forks with the bike on level ground.

Take off the wheel and there is plenty of room to get it off.
No need to have a curb or what ever.
Cool.
