Title: my gs500 idols at 3500rpm's help!!
Post by: chargercalvin on August 23, 2008, 03:14:33 PM
the idoling on my gs is about 1500 or so warm..... about were it aught to be, but lately when the engine is hot it has been getting stuck at about 3500 while its trying to idol down. if i rev it real high then hit the clutch it will idol all the way back down but very slowly from 3500 to 1500. if u touch the main idol adjustment(or what ever that idol adjustment is called) it will idol right down where it aught to be. So what could it be, the bike is not due for gettin the carbs rebuilt. im thinkin floats but i would hate to have to pull the carbs cause becides the idoling problem it runs great, i dont wanna make anything worse.

sounds rich? id check floats too. dont have to pull them to see if they are right. stick a vinyl tube on each drain of the carb bowl. bend the hose so it makes a u. unscrew bowl drain screw. see where the fuel level is in comparison to carb bowl. if it is where the gasket is, you are good. if not within 1mm+- of that than u need to pull carbs to adjust.

Might also check out the cables, I had a similar problem turned out i twisted up one of my cables after messing around with the carbs.

This sounds lean. Open air screws ... if you dont have cables stuck or a vacuum leak.
Look at the idle hovering post in FAQ.
Cool.

WHAt do you mean by warm? How long did you let it warm up ? If it was less than 10 to 15 min(idiling) you just need to let it get up to operating temp, then turn the idle adjust screw till you get it down to about 1200 rpm. There is more info in the wiki if you need it.

when i say warm i mean compleatly at operating temp like riding almost an hour or so. by hot i mean after a couple hours of riding non-stop shifting at relitively high rps's. when that hot and i hit the clutch it gets stuck at 3500 or so, but if i keep reving it up and letting it idol beck down it will eventually go back down to proper idol(but slowly from 3500 down). if its hot and i turn off the bike for about half an hour then start it back it will idol ok. but then after a couple muinates of riding it starts doing it again. :dunno_white:
