Title: Weird noise combined with lowish oil reading
Post by: wreckhog on August 24, 2008, 12:48:03 PM
Topped off oil the day before with a 1/2 bottle of Walmart 10W40 that brought the level from the bottom to the toip of the range on the stick. Measured while sitting on the centerstand. Woke up next day. Rode 10 miles to diner. Like I usually do, mostly in the 5K-8K range. Diner has dirt lot (borders a corn field). I pulll into a rut, put down sidestand, get off. Bike is tilting a bit to the left due to the soft uneven surface. F it, I'll pick it up later if it falls over when I eating. Come out an hour later. Still upright but tilting. Straddle bike, put on choke and start. Put on helmet. Hear an intermittent clatter when RPMs get to 5K range (still sitting in parking lot, idle on choke). WTF? Shut off bike, dismount, put on sidestand and check oil. It is at the low end of the range. Still have oil at least. Put on centerstand. Look for anything weird. Hot girl in BMW conv pulls up and asks for directions. 10 minutes later, start bike, helmet off, rev the hell out of it. No clatter. Ride 10 miles home. Short shift it, tach never goes over 5K the entire ride. Pull into garage. Before I even lift my visor or take off my gloves, I cut the engine, put the bike on the centerstand and check the oil. It is full; ie at the high end of the range. Hmmm. Oil on the stick looks perfect.

Thoughts?

dont know much about these bikes yet but sounds like if it was leaning over to far and u started it it could have drained the oil out of the oil-pump. and you should always check the oil on the center stand, not the side stand! hope this helps. noise could be from oil not getting to the valves quick enough and them not having the correct oil pressure at start up? with out hearing the noise it is had to diagnosis!

What year model is it? I understand some early ones had an issue with camshaft end float causing the kind of noise you describe. Apparently not a problem except for the noise. Later models have a shim at the end of the cam to prevent it.
Buddha?

I wouldn't worry too much. You rode it a distance the oil gets hot and works its way round the engine and then you parked it on the sidestand, the oil cools and then drains down through the engine. If it was a hot day and then you started the bike up again to leave the place the oil would circulate reasonably quickly but it sounds like it took abit of time to work its way round. When you shut it off it wouldn't have time to drain back down into the bottom of the engine again so your not likely to get a high oil reading after running the engine. When you get home and let it sit and check it the oil should be fine again.

I'm wondering if a clogged filter might be impacting the oil circulation. Which makes me wonder what clogged the filter. Will hit the local stealership for a filter and gasket tomorrow.

A clogged filter shouldn't affect circulation, there is a bypass system which lets the oil flow if the filter is blocked, but it doesn't go through the fliter so its not cleaned.
