Title: GS500e won't hold an idle...
Post by: Holmes on August 25, 2008, 02:12:14 PM
Starting to lose my sense of humor with this bike...

Took a short ride to a local shop a few miles out to pick up some new blinkers. On the ride home I began to notice flat spots in the throttle. Bike starts lurching and before I know it I'm in the certain turn lane trying to restart the bike. I let it sit for a few minutes, tried to start the bike with the choke open and had to opt for closing it off. Let the bike rev high for a minute and things seemed to return to normal. Two minutes later I'm at the side of the road again. Same story, except this time I start it up 15 minutes later and the bike won't idle below 3k. I got 30 blocks further when it died on me again. I pushed it home the last mile and a half.

PO had the carbs cleaned and jetted before I bought the bike in June. I've put less than 100 miles on the bike since then.

Anybody have any ideas or just want to buy the stupid thing?

Try running with the petcock in the PRI position. If this doesn't help, your carbs could be dirty again, if your gas tank is rusty or has a load of crap from old fuel in it.

Alright, switched the petcock to PRI and it started right up. Didn't get a chance to ride it around.

Does this indicate a specific issue and how should I deal with it?
