Ok so here is my problem i have a 2004 gs500f and i have had it for about 5 months and it only has about 7000.00 miles on it. I just changed the oil 4 days ago and whenh i got home from a 110 mile ride i opened my shed a day later and there was oil all over my floor, i turned it on and i didnt see any oil coming from anywhere, so then i went for a ride with a friend and abotu two hours later the bike just started puttering and then died, pulled over and then see oil coming out of a rubber tube that leads to the air box. so i pulled the other end out and a bunch of oil spills out, the bike was very tough to start without the throttle being held full out then it would only go for about 2 miles and then die again. Bike shifts fine, but not sure what is wrong. Can someone please help me out and let me know what you guys think. I dont know that much about bikes. The rubber tube has another one that leads to the top area of the air box but that has an open end and it looks like it is a breather tube. I am very confused. No oil is leaking anymore unless i ride it then more oil comes out of that tube. I checked the engine oil level and it still reads full and looks very clean like it did when i first changed it. Please help me out here.
Are you sure it is not oily gas? This sounds symptomatic of the fuel petcock being left in the Prime position. Fuel drains into the carbs continously, fills them and spills over into the airbox then drains out of the overflow tube. It has mixed w/ exhaust residue in the airbox and looks like oil. The hard starting is consistent with this as it is basically flooded out. Make sure your fuel petcock is in "run" not "prime".
Ok, yea i am positive that is on fuel/on not on prime or reserve, i have never changed it but made sure that it is on fuel/on not prime. I dont know whats wrong and it smelt like oil so i dont know whats wrong. Someone please help me out here. Im going to work on it right now. Let me know guys/girls. thanks
Could be a bad/broken ring causing excessive crankcase pressure and pushing oil out of the breather?
How much oil are you losing? If its significant, your oil level must be dropping.
I had this happen to me when I put too much oil in the bike. When it got hot it started venting through the air box. I did not however have it kill the bike, but then again when I realized what I did I drained and refilled the oil and cleaned out the air box.
ok so here it is, i only put about 2.7 quarts of oil in the bike when i changed the oil, when i rode it all the way back to my house which was about 110 miles. Then i parked it and 2 days later came out and there was a a puddle of oil on the ground. I strted nothing came out so then i went for a ride for about 2 hours. When we were almost back the bike just puttered out and then we noticed the oil coming out that rubber tube which drains out the bottom of the air box. I pulled that ribber cord off and about a half a court of oil came out onto the ground. The bike then sat for about 10 min started rigth back up and then we drove for about 2 miles and then died again. I think it may have been over heating thats why it wouldn't start and stay going. I took the air filter out last night and it smelled like gas but the air box still had oil residue in the bottom, and the bike was still tough to start for a little bit. I dont know what to do and i dont want to pay a bunch of money at a mechanic. So did your bike run fine after you cleaned it out and rechanged the oil? Im so confused on what this could be, cause the carbs have two air ducks that go into the air box, but i still dont know even if the oil was to high when it got hot how it could go into the carbs and then in the air box. Shoudl the air box smell like gas? let me know guys.
If there's too much oil, it can get pushed out of the breather on top of the engine, through the hose and into the airbox. Doesn't gothrough the carbs. The airbox might smel llike gas because its had hot oil in it. Oil or gas, its all dead dinosaurs!
Whats the oil level right now? Remember not to thread the oil dipstick back in, just rest it on the side cover. Also make sure its on either the centerstand, or the bike is vertical.
Let us know
K so i checked the oil level and it looked like it was a little high. But still i am wondering why is it so high when the manual says to put 3.1 in and i put 2.7 in. Ok and plus, my idle is really acting weird to, it will go for a while just sitting there and then idle down and die sometimes without riding it. I did try adjusting the idle screw it works somewhat, could this be do to the carbs running to lean. I still cant figure out why the oil is so high and why my bike is dying. Anyone. And thanks for the input guys i really appreciate it.
Yes, after I drained the oil, and got everything cleaned up the bike ran fine. The worst I got was some white smoke for the first little bit that I ran it.
I can tell you I vented what looked to me like a lot of oil. Kind of like blood, a little goes a long way when it's in a puddle....
what do you mean vented it? And did you ever have any other problems with the idling problem? Im just really worried on if there is something else wrong with the bike other than just having to much oil. So did you drain all of it out and then put new in. Does anyone else have any new ideas of what may be wrong and why theres oil in the air box and what can cause that and what can fix it and why the bike is having an idling problem. thanks again for all the suggestions guys. Im loving this forum
I was also draining from the same hose you are talking about. I was in California and stopped at a rest stop...to be honest I was lazy.
I had taken the oil out of my bags and figured I would use all of it. When I realized I had 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart left I did not want to go through the hassle of undoing all the bungee net to put it away so I put it in the bike.
I then rode from Sacramento to San Jose. When I got to San Jose the oil was dripping out the line from the air box. I also noticed oil spray on the rear left side of the bike. My Dad asked me about and I told him what I did, so he said I should drain the excess out. Since this was end of my trip from Seattle to San Jose I decided to go ahead and just do an oil change.
So I did a complete oil change. My air filter was clean, but there was oil in the box that I cleaned up using Simple Green and water, and made sure the vent hose was draining clean. Got it all put back together and when I started it I got a bunch of white smoke. Rode around the block, white smoke went away. Been fine, and serviced by a shop since. This was in June.
At no time did I have the idle or engine dying problem you are mentioning. I would say you should drain off some of the oil and get everything cleaned up and see what happens.
