i've tried searching high and low, but if one is using the gsxr 750 shock (long clevis?) instead of drilling a new hole and filing the linkage or shock itself, can you just swap the gsxr link/dogbone to compensate? or will this still raise the rear too high.

No one drills a GSXR shock (long clevise) ... if you do make it any shorter you will crush the rebound dial. No one files the lingake either, it all clears the thing well. You grind the linkage or whatever only to let the shock not hit the bottom of the clevise in a short clevise shock. A GSXR shock will fit without any of those mods being done.
If - You want to lower the ride height ... and a GSXR shock will pull up the rear end ~2 inches. You will have to have a set of dogbones that is ~1/4 inch longer. That is the only way to do it with a GSXR shock. Drilling it short will crush the rebound dial, grinding the linkage ... will let you drill it short, but on the GSXR shock, there is no room to drill it without making it so short clevised that no amoung of linkage grinding will let it not crush the rebound dial.
Essentially ... no one drills a GSXR shock. We drill SV 650 shocks, and the SV shocks are total crap anyway.
If you drill a GSXR shock, there is no way to get it to fit without crushing the rebound dial. No way, no how, never never ever ...
To lower it back down, make 1/4 inch longer dogbones. A GSXR dog bone will not be 1/4 inch longer ... I believe its like 1 inch longer and it will lower the GS seat/fender clean down into the back tire.
All this is about the pre 96 GSXR shock, the post 96 are piggyback's, and will not ever fit in there without major mods.
You want a better shock wihtout much raising of the rear, and nothing to be drilled cut etc ... send me $30 and shipping. I'll send you a B6 shock. Pretty much same POS as SV, but no drilling and no insanely tall bike.

No we dont drill a kat shock either ... only shock we drill is SV, and dont quite read outdated pages from somewhere and start fitting random things to it.
Posting here usually will give you the latest ... like say in 03 they changed the sv shock ... lets say ... you may see an old page that says all SV shocks fit ... you buy SV shock ... and boom, its not fitting ...
Stuff like that.
GSXR shock with a bit longer dogbones can leave it stock height and give you the firm and fairly compliant ride. Pre 93 I wanna say - 90-93 750 shocks are the best, 94 and later were too stiff cos they had a stiffer spring. Pre 90 was non remote reservoir.

I have an '03 GSXR shock on mine. Not sure if it's off a 600 or 750 but I think they are interchangeable. I also have custom dog bones on it. I think they are longer than stock. Not sure, Davipu made them. Everything fits fine. It's a wee bit snug but there aren't any clearance issues. Make sure you buy the linkage as well if you are attempting this mod.
And one other thing: I had to remove the center stand to make the shock fit.

all i can really find on this site is that dgyver has some pics of a gsxr with a top resivoir but they are not in his photobucket account any more, and that the spring is too large of a diameter to fit in the GS? Is that true?

What shock is too large diameter to fit in the GS.
The pre 96 750 and pre 99 1100 are not too large.
96 and later 750, 600 and 1100's are all not too large either ... however these are piggyback, and they are stupidly long.
Piggyback will make the air box impossible to fit.
The too long will need longer dogbones else the rear end will be very very high ... think DR650 high ...
The too long will also need removal of centerstand.
So is that what you were looking for. I've never fit 96+ 750 style shocks on mine.
