Title: Filter cover gasket question
Post by: pjm204 on August 30, 2008, 07:37:50 PM
My oil filter cover is leaking and I want to fix it, however I changed it only a few hundred miles prior....so my question is, if I take off the filter cover to put on a new gasket without draining the oil, how much oil will pour out of the filter? Please let me know

yes isn't really an answer to my question....
Do I have to drain the oil or can I just take the cover off....how much oil will pour out?

oops...  sorry...  didn't read the question right....

I'm not sure HOW MUCH will pour out, but considering the filter is really close to the bottom of the bike, I'd say a lot more than you'd want...  but since I haven't had a GS in a couple years, don't quote me on it.

Drain the oil into a clean container.

Replace the gasket.

Check the oil level and top it off.

Answer:  you'll lose whatever is in the filter only.
