Title: doomed
Post by: dadsafrantic on September 06, 2008, 11:10:05 AM
i think i am doomed to a life of sore butt from the bike.  i have about 28k since 05/06 and it is a bother to make the 35 mile trip each way to work.  is the seating material just worn out?  i really do not want to spend $500+ for a custom seat  any ideas for an added pad on top?

thanks.

How big are you, how much do you weigh, what year GS are you riding?

Most people over 120lbs or so take a while to build up some level of tolerance to sitting on a motorcycle for extended periods of time.  You should find that if you keep riding, the discomfort should reach a plateau and then recede.  That means you're starting to push your tolerance out.

Changing the shape of the seat to fit your butt can go a long way to helping.  The stock SV-650 seat is over 3" thick and reasonably cushy.  However, many find it incredibly uncomfortable for any length of time.  I went with the Oneida Suzuki low seat, which is wider and only about 1.2 to 1.5 inches thick.  However, it is significantly more comfortable than the stocker.

Firmer cushions are generally better for long-distance comfort.  If you're sinking too far into the stock seat, it could be entrapping you and hampering circulation.  American cars are great for this.  Nice thick, cushy seats that feel great for about an hour, but after that my legs go numb.

Could you have any medical problems aggravating the problem?

i recently redid my seat...

and when i covered it i put down a pair of doc schols jels (for shoes) then i double covered it...

in all cost me 20$

10 for the gel

5 for some more staples (for my staple gun)

5$ for half yard of marine vinyl

That sounds like a good cheap mod, but I'd suggest you do it to your bike's seat, otherwise your backside is going to look very wobbly with the gels attached, and those staples will HURT. :o
