Title: Should we drill.
Post by: The Buddha on September 09, 2008, 10:21:38 AM
OK should we drill off shore, alaska or in colorado or wherever ...

I'd say ... no, we should work on alternative energy etc etc, electric and nuclear seems good ... maybe some natural gas or coal ... wind, solar, hydrogen, compressed air and what not.

I'd leave the drilling to Middle east ... why ...

Hate to sound callous ... but the middle east is one of the few places on earth that has no redeeming qualities what so ever ... even siberia does. I'd say the polar bears, the wild moose and elk, the reindeer and the people who are living there like nomads are all to be left alone and preserved. The middle east ... other than history is a total waste. Venezuela or other places I am not sure, maybe they should be left as they are, light drilling and not large scale expansion.
Now if we were to consume 1/10 as much, middle east will essentially be able to supply us for 1000's of years. heck they will go bankrupt, oil drops to 30 a barrel and that is the end of most of those guys. We should develop more fuel efficient vehicles and use other fuels and not drill wherever we please. No sense fixing a problem with a solution that by the time the solution comes available, the problem is not there.

Then, they should stop, clean up, and restore the Injun way of life, then have solar powered cars and buy little oil from venezuela and be happy ...
But I thought russia was ...

That statement makes me wonder why the gas here in Canada is so damn expensive. I believe the best outlook for the future is to develop alternative fuel sources, such as ethanol from plant fiber. The technology already exists and a company here in Ottawa called Iogen has already produced fuel from ordinary hay. With the resources that Canada and the USA already posses, there should be more than enough crop waste that could be used to 'grow' our own fuel and become self sufficient.

you know, i also think that building cars that get better fuel economy would be a great idea. we'll use less oil. (making it cheaper) and we'll emmit less pollution. (making the earth cleaner and thus satisfying all the "green" freaks).

as a side note, it's my understanding that Honda is the only manufacturer to post a profit the last quater. hmmm....wonder why. maybe it's because they don't sell ANY vehicle with a massive v-8? (and i'm not biased, i bought a toyota.....    but would have bought a honda except that my toyota was a bit cheaper.  :dunno_white: )

Ethanol - well hay should be used to feed cows ... and yea we need to have more cows.
In india we make gas similar to CNG from cow dung ... no kidding. However in US they make mushrooms from hay mixed with cow dung or chicken shaZam! ... I think chicken shaZam!.

Oh, BTW solar power ... in 1 hour we get enough of it to power everything we own for a entire year. We just are unable to capture more than 1% of it.

a few years ago, I read an article about a genetically engineered bacteria that would turn any type of biological waste into alcohol. If I remember right, they would first turn the waste into a liquid then add the bug.

Think what it would do for landfills.

Also, I like some of the things T Boone Pickens is talking about. Wind, CNG, etc...

I'm an all of the above kind of person. Drill more and find alternatives.

However, that approach takes discipline, something I'm afraid we americans as a whole seem to lack now days.

Biological waste ... our landfills are full of plastic, paper, styrofoam, etc etc etc ... worthless crap. People should start seperating them.
You know In india we use everythign over and over ... heck the food in the can aint worth what it cost to make the can in the US. Pityful. We make so much trash ... use and throw, sauce bottles, coke bottles, fruit cans ... just idiotic.
