I know, I know - it's the oil off the chain. <g>
But let me tell the story: The bike new to me. Chain looked a little dry and what the hell? Oil never hurt a chain. I generally use bar & chain oil (for chainsaws?) or synthetic gear oil. This time it was B & C oil.
Lube it up until dripping and let it drain overnight. Rode out for 20-30 miles and parked. Came back and there was a spot of black oil right under the shifter spline.
No problem - it's chain oil.
That was two days ago. Ran out today for lots of errands and stops and at each one was a dime sized drop when I came out. Came home for dinner and there's a spot about the size of my index finger.
What would you do?
Can it possibly be the chain still dripping?
And if so - why doesn't it drip all along the chain? <g>

Centrifugal force flings the oil off the chain and into the sprocket cavity on the side of the engine. The forces involved when the chain changes direction are some multiple of G. :)

Hey man, how you been, how is the world of the KZ400 these days.
And good to know you have followed the evolutionary path of the KZ to the GS ... it wasn't the EX500 for sure.
Anyway, I dropped off the KZ list after I sold mine 2 years ago.
I have had a GS since 95 in some ways, I am the Poodle Head Mikey of this place.
Anyway, KZ is a lot of fun, and GS is very similar ... I've owned 1 of the former and 15 of the latter.
Cool.
Buddha.
About the oil drips. My daughter's bike had such drip from the sifter seal having backed-out of its recess. It is a new bike and the oil puddles were clean - of yours are black - it may well be chain oil that pooled onto the inside of the front cog cover. Remove teh cover, cleand up the area and check that damned seal. So far, her seal is still keeping it dry and all I did was drift it back in -- if it creeps again its getting a retainer or spring.

BTY: If you use gear oil for chain lube (synthetic or otherwise) doesn't that stink to high heaven!?!?!?!?
