Title: Petcock
Post by: wssmith on September 11, 2008, 06:40:43 PM
:dunno_white: I need help with the fuel starvation.I bought a 1997 GS500E that has been sitting for 4 years took it to the shop and had the carb kit put in.Two weeks later i had the bike. I threw on the gear and took off at 4500rpm the bike would just die. After reading a bunch of things on this i bought a new petcock and i put that on but still dies at 4500rpm.The bike runs great if i run it  in prime. Please any help would be great.Do you think i need to cahnge the petcock in the tank? Thanks

There is obviously a fuel blockage in the 'on' circuit, but not in 'prime' so the next thing is to check if it runs OK on 'reserve', because the 'prime' position draws fuel from the reserve hose. If that checks out, the problem will be a blockage in the 'on' hose or in the tank petcock. You could then lift the tank slightly, turn off the tank petcock, remove the two fuel hoses from the tank petcock, put a container under the outlets and turn the petcock on again. You should get good fuel flow from both pipes, if not then the tank petcock needs pulling and given a good clean out. Then flush the tank to get rid of the rust which is probably what's blocking it!
