Title: Ike and Gas Prices
Post by: nascarkeith on September 11, 2008, 08:45:56 PM
Heard that gas was going up because of Ike.  Several oil rigs and a large refinery in his path so they will have to shut down and gas will go up.  The trusty GS was filled up yesterday but my truck was low.  When my wife came home at 5:30 gas was $3.60 a gallon.  We went back around 10 to fill up my truck and it had already jumped to $3.94.  That is crazy.

Interesting how they jump UP immediately but take forever to get back down.  Even though crude had dropped to $104 a barrel this week from near $150 earlier in the summer, gas never went down proportionately.

Gotta love those multinational corporations -- they really care about the consumer.  NOT.  But they have friends in high places...

when YOU and 10 million other people fill up before a storm, you add to the silliness of it all.

so, you get ONE tank of gas at today's prices, and inflate the next 4 weeks of gas prices by doing so.

great. thanks allot. if we try really hard we can get the price to hover around $5.20 for a month, and SUV's WILL FINALLY ALL DIE OFF !!!

Ah - two issues here, A )Profiteering, or is it just supply-and-demand and market forces in the possible path of Ike which is a local hopefully short term issue ...and ...B) Global pump prices have failed to fall at the rate they accelerated when the price was going up.

Someone is making a lot of bread out of both.

Yeah I know I contributed to the problem but I have a pregnant wife at home so I can't take the chance of ending up without fuel.  With stations already out in the Houston area they will get their gas first and it could be next week before the ones in our area get more.  I know its a lot of bull with prices being raised and then people panic and drive the price up even more.  Its all crazy but I felt like I needed to feel the truck up in the best interest of my family.

Yep such a high percentage of gas price rises are caused by panic buying because people "think" they won't be able to get gas, when actually their aint guna be a problem at all. Look at that 'scare' a few months ago here in England, they said we were running out of fuel and wern't going to be able to get any for weeks. Everyone went out and frigging panic bought and ignored the government pushing it out over every radio and tv station that there a reserves for like 2 months, the only reason you might not get fuel so fast is because they have to ship it in a different way. But you arn't going to run out of fuel.

It also pisses me off because i get a priority fuel card due to my job, and i need petrol to get up to work and frigging get to the station and cant get in for miles of cars queued back who want to get fuel they don't need. They only need to put a 10nner in to top em up but they think that 10er is guna protect em from any fuel shortage.

The best advice is to ride it out, dont worry about it, no station is going to go without fuel (its their buisness) if they can avoid it and they will get fuel back as fast as they damn well can.

Yeah, it's come down off its peak here in the UK but not anywhere near where it was when we were when oil was 100 a barrel on the way up.

gas prices go up because the companies will use any excuse to make money.  until we as consumers take action we will continually be gauged.  i am glad i don't have a vehicle other than my GS.  but it looks like i will have to take my brothers new Mitsubishi 4x4 suv cuz he bought it and a Cadillac buy getting a mortgage on his house.  of course he does not have the money to pay for them.  the last time it was paid was in June and i was the one who paid it.  he got the foreclosure notice this week.   he has a fat 300lb Buddha Loves You ass fat Buddha Loves You Buddha Loves You gf who is sucking the money  off him and is using the Mitsubishi.  so the accountant we both use is taking the truck and giving it to me.  that will save dumb ass some money and maybe save his house.  you have to understand my brother has Munchhausen syndrome where he tells people he was in the army( he was for just over a year but did not finish basic training because he broke his leg) and did the gulf war and Bosnia.  as a matter of fact he was arrested at his college in NH when he showed up all cam-med up and armed saying that prince Charles called him and that he had to go to Bosnia on a secret mission.  when he broke his leg he kept making it worse so he would get attention. part of the syndrome and something he has done even as a child.  so he was medically released, not retired.  but he tells people he is a retired veteran.  he got veterans plates for his car and signes his name timothy w. bathauer, private(retired).  how pathetic is that.  but he has told people he was a commander or a warrant officer.  his house is full of Nazi crap( his last name is from a step father) and tells people he is a descendant of a SS officer. he tells people that he has all these weapons, security cameras(which he does have the cameras) explosives and other crap.  all this of course alerted police.  years ago, 10 or so, he did have some weapons but the police go a court order and he is not allowed to have any for life.  but he still tells people he has them.  as a matter of fact we were out one day in July in  his Cadillac and he told me he had a gun in the car.  so i told him to top and show it too me. long story short he would not show it too me but still said he had one.   he has fake medals, fake pictures and other crap at his house to give him the props for his lies.  everyone in the family knows that he has not been out of the country and did not have any military career to speak of.  to make matters worse he has played down or tried to get family members to believe i did not have the military experience that i had.  which is just foolishness. you can not spend over 20 years in and it be fake.  ugh i could punch him in the face.  but he gets his disability pension for a broken leg that he made worse by choice.   he tells people he was shot and that is how it happened.  he tells people including our mother that he had hip surgery.  of course ma is a nurse and he does not get away with that.  Tim is addicted to dilaudid which a old fart half senile doctor prescribes it to him.  even after i called the doctor and told him that Tim is injection the meds and selling them for extra money he keeps prescribing them.  you have to know that Tim is a skunk and a skunk always smells like a skunk but if you get in a fight with a skunk  you will stink but the skunk will remain the same.  what i mean by this is that if you try and get help for Tim, for his addiction or mental illness he stirrs up so much shaZam! that everyone, so far, has backed off.  being his only brother ma and i have just resigned ourselves to just ignore him and let happen what happens.  veterans affairs which is picking up the tab for this waste of space is telling him to go to rehab because they are not going to pay for his drugs anymore.  of course he is just sitting in his house, which is falling apart around him, shooting up dilaudid and not in touch with reality.  i am sure in his mind that if the sheriff comes to take his house he is going to call the media, refuse to leave and scream they are kicking out a disabled vet. f%$k he pisses me off. i mean he gets 1600.00 a month tax free, free medical and free prescriptions for nothing.  he spent 18 months in the army, broke his leg and has milked it for everything.   and that he has a veterans plate on his car kills me. he also has a disabled sticker.   15 years ago i told him to have the leg, below the knee, amputated.  i mean in the 70's terry fox ran across Canada on a prosthetic leg so he will be better and this is 2008.  but then he would lose his pension and actually have to work.  it f%$king pisses me off.  when i got wounded part of it was in my hip.  after i got out of bed i was in a wheel chair, then i went to a cane.  the whole time i was using the cane i had pictures of Tim in my mind.  i refused to "make a career of being sick" and got rid of the cane as quickly as possible.  my injuries were much more than his ever were. and mine were in action not on the soccer field.  i was not going to be a "Tim" .   i was told by our accountant Jane that Tim got a medical cheque in.  he owes Jane 200 bucks for a cell phone bill and i spent 450 on his meds so he could get them early.  this check was for the medication.  i want that money it is mine...and Jane's.  but he never pays anyone back. the week i paid Tim's mortgage in July i also bought groceries and gave him some cash.  the total for that week was just over $1200.  also since i got here last October, according to Jane, he has gotten well over $5000 out of me.  but still i get his bull shaZam! and right now he is telling our mother that i am off my methadone and doing cocaine again.  which is not true, u guys know that cuz i would tell you.  ma asked Jane and Jane knew i was doing what i was supposed to do what i am doing.  ma was here last weekend and it was to check on me.  as soon as she got to my place she knew i was not doing drugs again.  i looked healthy, i had not picked my face apart like i do on coke with the cocaine psychosis.  also i had stuff...my hdtv's, ps3 , blue ray, groceries...things i don't have if i am on drugs.  but he just can't stop his lying and being an all round jerk.  Tim is big into salt water fish tanks.  he has no credit with any one anywhere because he does not pay his bills.  he has stolen thousands of dollars of stuff or services over the years using the "disabled vet" thing, hobbling around on the can moaning and groaning playing the poor injured party.  but now he has conned on of the pet store employees to believing his stories are real and now this guy is buying stuff for Tim in his name on the promise that Tim will pay it back.   this young guy believed all of Tim's crap and was at Tim's house and saw his fake memorabilia and pictures. he bought it hook line and sinker.  lord knows how much it will cost him.  Tim lost his wife and son due to his bull shaZam!.  he tells people he had to let his wife and son go because he is being harassed by the police and government, that he has a price on his head and they need to be safe.  she moved with her son to Boston and has had no contact with Tim.  she actually is remarried.  if you ask Tim he says it is not true.  he has not heard from her or her son in 5-8 years but he says he is talking to her all the time and supporting them.  in reality he has no contact and yet to pay a dime.  he also tells this story of 5 armed "druggies" breaking into his house to get his drugs.  OK remember this is the disabled guy that needs a cane and disability parking.  he says he fought them off and shot a couple of them and kept their weapons.  he also says that he used his "connections" to keep it out of the media.  holy lord f%$king f%$k f%$k he is out of his f%$king mind.

OMG i think this is a record frank rant.  but this is something that has been bothering me for 20 years.  having him lying, cheating, steeling, taking benefits away from true veterans and hero's with his fake injuries.    i would love to punch the shaZam! out of him but he would have me in jail for years. and i would like to kill that 300 lb fat pig he is with.  but here i am probably taking his truck to make the payments to save his sorry ass.  but then again he is just going to be back in trouble again cuz he will get money some where some how for something frivolous like fish for his god damn tank.  he is an embarrassment to the family but my mother in particular.  when my mother had her stroke he and my daughter Lisa were coming down to Maine to be with ma.  i was already there cuz i was living at ma's at the time.  at the boarder instead of telling the truth and just getting trough with out any problem, Tim and his psychotic mind started with the storied.  according to my daughter who is 27 and was with him. he went into how he was a former American navy seal(he is Canadian with no dual citizenship) wounded in Iraq and going to see ma who had a stroke. he was telling the story like ma had the stroke because Tim was wounded in Iraq.  anyhow boarder guards are not idiots and he got sent in for the big check.  they ran his name and low and behold he had a warrant for his arrest in New Hampshire, where he attended college.  the warrant was for back check.  anyhow he spent 2 weeks in jail and my daughter did not make it to see her grandmother who was ill.  she had to go home with a aunt who picked her up.  some how Tim got out of jail and said it was all a misunderstanding and blamed the whole thing on one of our uncles who he likes to post blame to.  he also said it was me that tipped off the boarder guards about him crossing.  well my mother just had a stroke in front of me and i was only concerned with her and being with her.  i did not even know what happened to Tim until my daughter called me once she got home.   i am pretty sure that Tim would be arrested if he tried to cross the boarder again. but all this was because he is a pathological liar and can not just tell the truth.  he has to say or do something that makes him look like a hero. he is no hero, he is a army wash out, he is a high school drop out, a college drop out, a liar, a nut, a fake, a fraud, a all round lying pain in the ass.   i used to think that Tim started this whole lying thing around his pain killer use. but ma told me that before Tim was ever in the military or ever on pain killers he was still a pathological liar.  one day a Cadillac dealer called ma and told her that her son Tim had called and was buying a Cadillac for her. that all she had to do was come in and pick the color and options.  this was 1980-82 somewhere around then.  even back then ma knew about Tim's lying and bull shaZam!.  she told the sales person who called that once he saw the money to call her.  of course it was just Tim's bull shaZam!.   he used to have a fake badge back in the day and tell people he was a undercover cop.  then he was a  helicopter pilot.  the list of crap goes on and on.  he has wasted so much time, money and resources that could be used for people that truly need it that i am just livid.  he tries to put himself up with our real hero's and that annoys me even more.  if i get that truck the first thing ii am going to do is get rid of the veterans plates.  if someone like Tim can get veterans plates then they are not worth anything to me.

man i could go on..but i won't.  most of you won't have the patience to read all of this anyhow.  sorry about the hijack.

We filled up all 4 cars, GS500EY, and the snapper riding mower and all gas cans before the hurricane hit. The boat had about 12 gallons in it left from our last trip out. I was NOT going to pull that bastard out in the mayhem to fill it up. I used most of "my" gas in "my" car running around trying to find ice to keep the ice chests cold and the meat that we had hoarded from spoiling. 6 days without power but we had cold water showers. Plenty of propane and good old Mr. Coleman stove and fuel. We literally "camped out". I figure we got 'bout 5-7K in damage. Awaiting insurance "adjuster". The National Guard was mighty good to us. Plenty of free MRE's (some of 'em pretty damn good!) and cases of free bottled water..........and sometimes ice. The heat was unbearable trying to sleep at night. New homes with 8 ft. ceilings are NOT meant to be without air conditioning. Mosquitoes were horrifying and in abundance but I got a few bottles of deep woods off well beforehand. Thank God for the "Guard".

...Yeah, I've noticed this disturbing trend too.  Crude has dropped in the neighborhood of 30%, whereas we really haven't seen any significant drop at the pump.  Sure, we've had our national average back under the $4/gallon mark, and I've seen gas as low as $3.45, but that's hardly a proportionate decrease.  Just wait until crude gets back in the neighborhood of $140+/barrel.  I'm guessing we won't be sitting anywhere near $4/gallon like we were a couple months back when it peaked.  Ridiculous GREED!

How about this... In middle Georgia.

Wednesday gas prices.  $3.60
Friday gas prices.  $4.45

WTF!! Georgia usually has lower gas prices than Florida but my mother in law said Florida topped out at $3.90....

there was no shortage, at all.

people filled their cars, boats, vans, RV's, gas cans, in the hopes of staving off a little gas hike.

the average person filled their SUV and spent $10 less than had they just waited for the price to drop again (if ever). $10.

Now, since 10 million people did that, there was a REASON to stiff people.

The wife watched as an attendant put bags over the 87 octane pumps in Tampa. A woman pulled in and demanded some kind of ticket showing fuel levels from that morning. The attendant pulled the bags off very sheepishly, and as she left, they put bags on again. All the stations were covering 87, but apparently there was no end to the 93 (at $4.60/gallon).

Amazing.

While we're on the subject, there is not a 50 cent difference in 87 and 93 octane. People are just 50 cents dumber.

Lmao!  Yeah, I really did not like them at all. Sometimes, when really hungry, they did ok.  But man I loved our chow at 1/19 and 2/19.  It was proll ythe best mass produced food Ive ever ate...I dare say some of the best food period.  The tuna was off the chain.

But yeah, Even gas here in kentucky went up...not by much cmopared to other states mind you, like 3.99 from 3.55ish. I was very suprised at how quickly it went down too.  Like its already back down to 3.58.  wierd huh.  lol.
I guess were lucky.
I miss when gas was 1.10 a gallon.   :dunno_white:
