Title: Would anyone like to donate a set of stock GS wheels to a project?
Post by: makenzie71 on September 13, 2008, 06:32:11 PM
I've been asked to find a way...any way...to make a modern set of alloy wheels fit the GL/CX500/650 that will accept a decent 17" sporty tire.  There's a tip in it should I get a buy going for the conversion but between medical bills and life bills I don't have the start-up funds for the project.  In the event the project doesn't work the front wheel would be returned...the rear wheel will most likely undergo permanent modification.

To those with a set of wheels laying around...you know I love you, right?  like a brother, I mean...not like an.

do you have a free machinist/lathe lined up already ? prints ( NO METRIC CRAP !) ?

one of the guys at work just bought himself a smaller cnc mill, so he'll be needing work soon to tote the note....

yeah I have access to two full machine shops and (collectively) 1,800 years of experience haha...I'll be doing most of the work myself, though..  I don't have prints yet because I'm not sure at this point to what extent the GS wheel is going to need to be modified.

I would like to add that I will cover ALL shipping expenses should I be able to snag a set of wheels.  Just box them and I will mail you a UPS shipping label.

i got a bandit 400 front wheel and a GS rear. front is the same as the GS but rotor is on the wrong side but could be drilled for a right side rotor.

i really don't want the wheels back if you just want to give me like 25 bucks plus shipping. no rotors or gears but i will throw in the GS crush drive

Interesting little project....... Out of interest how are you going to modify the chain-driven GS wheel to fit the CX shaft drive?

Thinking at the moment...it's hard to know the plan without having the parts before me, though...the sprocket side will have to have the cush sections milled down a bit and I'll have to widle out a plate that will have a pattern on one side to fit the remaining cush ridges to lock down and then have a pattern on the opposite side to bolt the CX ring gear to.  It's hard to put into words...I have the part in my mind, though, and it seems like it'll be fairly simple to mill out.  I was hoping to think of a way to keep a cush setup, though, but I'm not having much luck with that.

The wheels will have to be run backwards, though, for that little bit of clarification.

I just like the idea, your posting (transfering by mail) a label which will allow the item to be (transfered by mail)

Kinda philisophical. I don't have some GS wheels btw, would you be able to just go down your local breaker and pick up two sports bike rims? IF they are going to be modified to fit this new contraption surely they are going to be sandblasted and resprayed in which case condition doesn't matter too much.

ah...I got lost but I get it.  Yeah shipping the shipping method is kinda interesting lol

There is only one breaker in Lubbock and he's a dork.  I once asked him about a set of forks he had laying about because I thought I might modify them to fit the CX.  I know they were 1992~era CR125 forks.  They'd been sitting out for years, the seals had completely rotted out of them, the tubes were scarred up and the lower triple was cracked.  I asked how much he'd like for them...$350.  Do they still work? I don't know.  What are they from?  I don't know.  Are they inverted or conventional?  I'd have to look that up (at which point he was carrying them).

Plus I don't need just any sportbike wheels.  The GS wheels are PERFECT for the project.  Hell, the front wheel will bolt up unmodified.  I looked at CBR variants and either couldn't find 17" with compatible axle dimensions or the wheels are just too wide.  There are a few other zook wheels that may work but if I get above 3.5" the swingarm will have to modified to get it a tire on it.
