I was having a good day today, spent time with the family, got my VS running untill i stripped 2 bolts replacing the valve cover. So what are my options? A. take to a shop. what would that run me? B. order new bearing caps. if thats possible and i dont know anything about C. Helicoils how do i install them. i assume i have to drill out the old threads or whats left. Its my daily rider but luckily im getting my truck fixed soon but this becomes priority 1 for me. always appreciate any help.
The best option is for you remove the caps from the bike, take them to a bike-shop an engine recon outfit or even a auto-garage and ask them to helicoil to OEM spec. Its not a big job, in fact it doesnt come any simpler, they are small parts that are easy to handle and there is no broken remenant to remove. It will take 10-15 mins to do each one and if you make prior arrangements with them they might even do it while you wait........costs will not be excessive.
Its important you dont mix the caps up so mark each one and make sure you know which location it comes from.
New caps are not an option, they are not available as individual parts. They are machined as part of the head when it is manufactured in the factory and owing to the fine tolerances involved are not designed to be interchangable.
VS ?? intruder ??
But I'll helicoil it for you if its like a GS I just did a couple. I'll do em for $5 each. Send me and I'll send back in 1-2 days.
Cool.
Buddha.
Did the same freaking thing a few months ago. Took it to a motorcycle repair shop and had the threads redone cost me $70 for both. Wish I knew Budda would of done it for $5 a pop.
