Can anyone tell me which Xena disk lock they like best and why? I've seen the online tests and it looks like this is hands down the best.
Also, any other recommendations for additional alarm or security items that I should consider?
How about a heavy cable and an even heavier object? Two guys can pick up a GS and walk off with it.
Option #2: Park next to a brand new Aprilia or Ducati. Be sure not to wash or wax your machine. ;)
An alarm is a good idea, but only to alert you to what is going on. Don't expect it to deter them much.
I second parking next to a more expensive bike. Also, when I'm parked at home, my girlfriend parks her car in a way that makes the bike nearly impossible to move without also moving the car. I figure anyone motivated enough to move a Corolla to get to my bike will probably defeat any other security mechanism I have in place...

if you take the fairings off they won't look twice at your bike. theives don't know what a gs500 is, only gsx-r600, r6, r1, etc
Disk-locks???? hhmmm, not the most effective way. Like Geep said it wont stop a gang of heavies handballing your bike into a van before grinding it off where no-one can see them doing it. A Kryptonite lock and chain around the nearset lampost is a far better option,

Plus......you can often forget about a disklock before riding-off, like my mate did yesterday.......my ribs are still hurting
I have the Xena XR1 & it's got some nice features to it. I bought it cause a dealership was going out of business and couldn't pass up the deal. Can't say I've had to use it yet though. It's got an 110db movement/shock sensor on it so hopefully it'll go off on ya as a reminder to take it off b4 riding.
This is my opinion. If a thief wants your bike, he/she is going to get you bike. I don't care what alarm/security you have. Some thieves are relentless. The best security is FULL COVERAGE insurance.

I can agree with that if you own an expensive bike. BUT it can be expensive.
For an old, used GS, it can be cheaper in the long-run to do what you can and replace it if it disappears. For the premium of full coverage insurance, I could purchase another GS like mine every other year. Yet, the chances of it getting stolen where I live are about moot.
Cost/benefit ratio and all. :)
Thanks for all the insight, ideas and humor. I have full coverage which was < $250/yr for me so that was easy. It's parked in my garage sandwiched by a car so safe there. I don't plan on leaving it unattended except outside my office where I can see it when going to work!
I'd avoid the disc lock with the alarm - I bought one and had lots of false alarms. Took it back in the end and got my money back.
Paint it matt black and dont wash it.
Then park it between a nice shiny new Sv100s and a mint condition orton Commando.
This works for me when I am at work.
Spread the deterenets and NEVER use just one method.
I use:
1) Wall Anchor and a very heavy chain with a big fat padlock
2) Disc lock with movement sensor for front brake disc
3) as above for back brake disc
4) Park car 2" from bike stopping anyone lifting it...
5) Keep baseball bat to hand in case someone is stupid enough to set off both disc alarms and try and lift the sucka :thumb:
No need to dismantle your bike, get it dirty or park next to a Yamaha, Honda, Kawa or even a Suzi Gixxer.......just protect and and keep one eye on the b/bat :icon_mrgreen:

Yeebus - do you have a cheap bike, or bad insurance? ;) The difference between liability and full on my bikes has always been so nominal that I just get it.
And after having a place with a garage - I will never go back to garagelessness.
Roadstergal: Cheap bike.
