Title: Love my new avon roadrider tires!!!!
Post by: stormchaser on September 15, 2008, 01:56:19 PM
Just wanted to thank the board for recommending Avon AM26 Roadriders for my 1990 gs500.
Commuting 100 miles a day mostly freeway and shes straight down the road even in high winds ( cruising at 90 mph in left lane). I love it when I pass all the slow hogs on the road with my little 2 cyclindar GSJet.  My back tire that was on there before was wavy probably from out of balance. It would shimmy on a turn when the back was entering and exiting a turn. I assume from the wave on the tire. I hope I can get at least 10k out of these tires. Replaced both front and rear stock 130 70 17 on the rear and 110 70 17 on front. Anyways hope to see you guys on the road. Haven't seen any fellow GS's on my commutes so far. Live in Hemet, CA and commute to Carlsbad, CA. Let me know if any you guys commute that way. Later.

I run the same tires.
Got mine here:

Had a good experience with the company.  Cut dealer prices almost in half!
Just get quotes for mount and balance before you make your purchase.

The Roadriders are near the top of tire bargains for the GS right now in my opinion.  A good tire at a low price for it's class, a sport touring bias ply tire from a major mc tire manufacturer.  Hard to beat as a commuter tire, good but not the best for the twisties.

I just passed 10k miles on my 140/70 rear Roadrider and measured the remaining tread depth at the center, it has 3 mm of the original 7 mm left which is about 1/3 of the useable depth if changed when it hits the wear indicators.  My front Roadrider has less miles on it, they should go about 15k miles for me.

They don't handle or stick quite as well as my favorite (so far) Lasertec/RoadAttack combo but they're about $40-50 a tire less expensive at my local supplier than the bias Lasertecs or the Metz, Conti, or Avon sport touring radials I've used.  A very good buy if you don't ride at the limit in the twisties.  Cost $133 for a oem size pair at my local place, about the same plus shipping if you buy online from AMT.

Yep, good tires. I like mine pretty well and I also ordered them from AMT.

I'll be in the market for some tires soon.  Does this vendor offer FREE shipping?

nope, but it's not much though. My last order was $16 for shipping and I ordered other stuff (tire removal and installing tools) besides my two tires.

Got my tires at swmototires.com (http://swmototires.com). I originally wanted 140 70 17 on the rear but they were out of stock so I went stock size on the rear 130 70 17 seems just fine. They have free shipping when you buy two tires at the same time. I think it cost around $155 for both. Got the tires in three days too pretty quick. Of course there located in Arizona and I live in southern California, not too far away. Done some major work on the bike in the last three months. Hadn't ridden it in a few years sitting in the garage. Replaced Head and cylindar gaskets and all four valves. Cleaned all the carbon off inside, and replaced a lot of worn out gaskets (carb, gas tank so on). Dialed in the valves with shims. After all that she's running like new. Easy bike to fix and maintain as long as its not something major like a seized motor.        Anyways, thats my motorcycle's life story.  Later
