Title: Changing the Break Lever
Post by: bakwoi on September 17, 2008, 06:42:24 PM
Hi,
I just got my gs500 the other day (I am soo pumped)  but it was sold with a broken front break handle lever.  Just the ball at the end is broken off and I figured it would not require much effort to change it.  I am by no means a mechanic but it looks like it's just on there with a nut and bolt.  Is there a tutorial anywhere or has anyone changed the break lever that can give me some info on this???

Thanks

Just a heads up -- I'm definitely NOT the grammar or spelling nazi on the board -- but your bike has a front a rear BRAKE, not break.  Occasionally, a brake lever will break, but usually only if you lay the bike down on the right side.  That's probably what happened to yours.   :thumb:

One more thing on that lever.  It is adjustable to fit the size of your hand. That's what the little wheel with the numbers is.

Uhm, the stock '04 doesn't have numbers on the brake lever. Did they do that in previous years? Would like an adjustable one but haven't seen a part number for it. Went to the stealership and the OEM was just a plain lever too! Could you enlighten us on where to get one?

Thanks,

Mary S.

just about any brake lever for 88-2002ish sport bikes will fit
i've used kaw/hon/suz on a GS master cylinder
black silver...or colored....check e-bay

the clutch lever is GS specific
get a clutch perch for a GSXR and you can buy cheap sets of levers off of e-bay

You don't really need the ball at the end but it is a good idea, as it is designed to stop the brake lever stabbing you if you fall off. It is easy to change the lever.
