Title: Finaly dropped the bike
Post by: Mdow on September 19, 2008, 09:27:29 PM
ya so it happend i knew it would at some point.  i was trying to get it up on its center stand to do my katana front end and on the dozenth try to get it up it was almost their and then the center stand sliped back and i just couldn't hold the bike up and it fell over.

broke the right peg off and bent the brake lever. alittle scratch on the muffler but i think all in all it came out pretty good.

i got another part or two to put on then i will have a recent progress build thread

Left foot on the centerstand pedal, both hands on the passenger grab handle.  Push down on the stand pedal and lift up/pull back on the grab handle.   ;)

They all fall once in a while.  Who the hell was stupid enough to design a machine with only two wheels?  Everybody knows a stool needs at least three legs, preferrably four.

P.S.  I still want to know where to get a Rocket Turtle.

^ i might have to try that method i do right foot on center stand and both hands on handle bars.

you have to be SUPER cool to get a rocket turtle.

its a keychain i got with the bike, its from an old DSL company.

There is an easy trick to center-standing your bike.  Granted it's on the easy side for me to say that since I'm 250+ pounds.  Anyway:

1. Kickstand goes up.  I always lift the left side peg out of the way too.
2. Center stand pushed to the floor, and while holding it firmly down with your right foot, (left hand on the left grip, right hand on rear subframe OR as recommended in the video, the grab bar.) lean the bike upright until you feel the BOTH SIDES of the centerstand touching.
3. All at once, nice and smooth, pull back with the left hand, back and upwards with right hand, and push down hard with that right foot.  Let your leg do most of the work!

Should pop right up!  :thumb:

Sorry to hear of your damages!
You can also find a sample video on youtube:

I always leave the kick stand down.  If I lose it, the kick stand saves the day.

Left hand on the left grip.
Right hand on the frame under the seat.
Right foot on the center stand peg, lower it to the ground.
Stand the bike up with your left hand until both feet of the center stand are touching the ground.
PUSH HARD with your right leg and rock up and backwards with your right hand.

The leg does MOST of the work, as theUBS said.

Why do people struggle with this? I just dont get it........... :dunno_white:

Getting it up on the center stand should be part of the License criteria......ie. if you cant do it, you dont get one

I have found putting my foot on the center, grabbing the left bar and under the luggage rack works well. pull back on the bars and up on the rack and it goes right up, plus if it slips it will come toward you not away, and I leave the side stand down just in case. I had a hell of a time gitting it up on the center until someone in this fine online community enlightened me.

I keep my left hand holding the left handgrip - and start with both feet of the center stand on the ground.  I put it on the center stand a couple of times a day and never have even come close to dropping it away from me.

My buddy , a suzuki tech, told me to hold the left grip w/ left hand , left foot on the side stand, and put all your weight on the stand( ie. stand up) and viola, bike is up every time.

It took me forever to get my center stand technique down. I read tons of posts about it and watched videos, but I didn't really understand what I was doing until I got it right the first time. It is one of those strangely hard to learn things, but once you've got it, you wonder how it could have ever seemed hard...

Yeah, initially you're just fumbling around and feeling awkward, then one day it all comes together.
Just like sex.

I just dropped mine, too!  I thought the side stand was down and walked away, only to hear a crash about 10 seconds later!  Oh well, that's why I bought a naked bike (and everyone said I'd drop my first bike).  I only needed a new clutch lever.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned getting it up on the center stand by being on the bike.  Am I an idiot for doing this?  I find that if I simultaneously step down on the center stand hard and get a bounce off the front suspension while pulling back with both hands on the grips, it pops right up.  And if it doesn't, you're straddling the bike to catch it to whatever side it falls to.

But I'm brand new to all this stuff, so what do I know?

i was taking mine off the centerstand when i dropped mine......lol .  I think alcohol and barefeet played into that one.  I normally always mount the gs to take it off, i feel safer that way. Well, I was drinking, felt like my bike was leanign funny, so i decided to take it off the stand and put it on the kickstand.  Well, I yanked it, it leaned away, my barefeet slid, and I managed to muscle it down. I only knicked up the front brake lever and the f%$king engine cover thingy on the side...my mind is drawig a blank here...Ive been up for 20 hrs with 4 hrs of sleep prior...lol.  anyways...it sux.  I think most of us have been there in one way or another.  I hope thats the last time i do that.  But who knows....alcohol will make you do stupid things.  Ill prolly do it again.(and no, I wasnt otu riding...I was on my front porch. I will never drink and drive)
