Title: Smokey and smelly starting
Post by: Trotter on September 20, 2008, 02:08:09 AM
Any advise for a starting problem which has started - smokey and smelly starting. Fine when running though. Some one mentioned replacing the valve guide seals. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Yeah, I'm no mechanic, but there's a big difference between unspent fuel and burnt oil. Color makes giving advice easier!

unburnt fuel, or oil have a HUGE difference in color, and smell.   unburnt fuel will have a black color and a smell I dont know about, but oil will smell kind of oily and be grey colored smoke.   coolant smells kind of sweet, and is close to oils color, but the GS doesnt have coolant, since its an oil/air cooled motor.

Hope you didnt pay him..........the GS5 doesnt have any.

White smoke indicates mixture/carburation problems.

The bike is stored outside under a cover - no money shelled out yet. It varies from morning to morning.

Doesn't catch on starting as well as it used to, though the mornings are a little colder/damp.

See how it goes and keep on hitting those roads
