Title: Any V-Star knowledgeable folks?
Post by: makenzie71 on October 02, 2008, 08:17:50 PM
A guy brought me a V-Star 1100 that's making an odd noise on deceleration...it's obviously gear whine and it's coming from the drive-line but I can't tell exactly where it's coming from.  Anyone know of any common issues?

A lot of them seem to have that gear whine (from new)from what I've read. Check the dif/final drive oil... Also some say changing to a good synthetic oil helps the motor/trans end of it.

Did he just put a windshield on it?

My VX800 probably makes a little gear noise but my drilled out exhaust ( came that way from P.O.)  drowns it out I'm sure.

I may be stopping by my local dealer this afternoon - I'll ask the Techs I know about it.

I'd appreciate that, Jared.  I'll be asking around a bit this afternoon as well.

The oil in the final drive and crank case all look good...and the final drive smells like rotten fish so nothing out of the ordinary there...I hate shaft-drive bikes anymroe...

The biggest problem I have seen with Vstar's is the spark plugs tend to have a tendency to get cross threaded cos the area above the plug tends to hit your wrench a good bit.
Cool.

A whine on the overrun suggests wear in the bevel-gears, get the rear wheel off the deck and check for back-lash in the drive train. Worn splines or a worn UJ tend to make more of a click/thud......but until the thing is apart  its all best guessing.

My sources tell me that the V-star has a known problem with the mid section drive shaft  and is prone to failure of a retaining nut that holds the UJ. Syptoms of which are similar to the ones you describe....... a fact that seems to be backed-up here....
