Title: Tire feels slick, and feels like it slides an inch or so while riding
Post by: quiktaco on October 03, 2008, 05:36:02 PM
This is slighty re4lated to another thread of mine...Cut off!!! badly.

Anyways driving home today, I realized that my rear tire seams to be really slick.  Almost like it's sliding side to side and inch or two every once in a while.

It didn't feel like this a few days ago, but yesterday and today it does.

Does anyone know why it could feel like this?  It almost feels like someone rubbed down the tire with oil, but I felt it and it didn't seem that way.

well, you also said it locked up entirely too easily in that other thread. i wonder if the tire has failed ?

sure, being cooler now and not having them warmed up has a ton to do with things, but it shouldn't feel like it's sliding.

when i rode in this morning the tires were cold (50f is cold to me since moving from florida!) and i didn't notice a sliding feeling at all. i do swerve the first mile or two of my commute for this very reason though.  there is one turn on the way that really lets me lean and it never feels like the tires will let go at a reasonable speed.

i use bt-45's though, don't know what you're rockin

How's your tire pressure? If it is a bit low, your tire won't grip the road as well as it should. It doesn't take a lot of loss of pressure to cause a noticeable effect..

+1  Tire feels funny = check pressure...

First thing I was going to do...had to get home first.  I'm sure that's it.  I had it backward though.  I would have thought that lower pressure would have given a bit more grip.  I guess not though.  I'm going to go check it out and let you guys know.

BTW they're BT-45's as well.  They've always been great till 2 days ago.  I can usually lean pretty far without worry.  I still feel like I can lean, it seems to feel slick when it's almost straight up and down.  Very weird.  Almost like I hit black ice or oil slick or something.  Can't really explain it other than that.  Just feels like it slides an inch or two to the side, then it's fine again.

that's exactly the -rear tire is low- feeling. well, if you only have 5psi then it won't get any better when ya lean ;)

yes, i've had to go 1/2 a mile to a air pump on about 5 psi. it sucks !

I'm ashaimed to admit it, but 28 front and 34 rear.   I haven't checked them in about 4 or 5 weeks I think.  Really should do that more often.  I think I'm going to go through a lot of the bike this weekend and do a mild tune up and check.  After my near fall yesterday (covered in that other thread) I really need to make sure everything is in line.

I'll fill them up and let you guys know if it's better or not tomorrow after I ride again.  Thanks for the help.

also you could have some flat spots from locking it up that will cause a abnormal ride

Woah, that doesn't sound fun at all... I always just use a bicycle pump to inflate my tires... I don't have room for a compressor, but a bike pump does just fine.

Filled them up to 40 psi and the ride in this morning was great.  Didn't feel that slipping feeling at all.  No flat spot where it locked either...a little bit of rough rubber but nothing much.

Thanks guys.  The bike feels a lot more solid now.

I think it used to be true, but with modern rubber compounds it is likely an old wive's tale that some air is lost through the pores in the tire material.  Even if there is still a speck of trught in that, it is negligible.  But tubeless tires can and often do seap a bit of air about the bead seats if care is not taken to clean them thoroughly at tire change time.  Tubeless type Schrader valves (tire vavles) can also crack and leak at the bottom and the valve core can leak too.  Use soapy water in a spritz bottle (like an old Windex bottle) to soak the seam at the bead seats -- if they are seaping, it will grow a little beard of bubbles or froth over a period of a few minutes.  Spritz some of the bubble solution around the base of the valve and into the end of the core -- bubbles will tattle tale on any leaks.  I think the only air my bike loses is when I check the air pressure; except lower ambient air temps this time of year up North sure do cause an effective pressure drop without any loss of the actual air.  I have compressors and such, but also use the foot operated bike pump often because its easier to use for just a few puffs of air.
