Title: 12V question
Post by: Big Lou on October 05, 2008, 05:03:39 PM
Hooked up a 12V cig lighter for the GPS during my trip.  Question is, will it put a drain on my battery even if nothing is hooked up to it?

If nothing is hooked up it wont pull any power. I just pull the fuse on mine if I know it wont be used for a while.

I've done the same thing (for my GPS or cell, etc.).  My question is what size fuse should I use to protect my electronics?  I don't know how much a GPS, for instance, would pull and I sure don't want to blow the thing.

Thanks! :dunno_white:

A lot of those cigarette plugs come with inline fuses... 10 or 15 amps seems common, I'd start there...

I'm using a 15 on mine...no problems to date.

I've had a cigarette lighter type accessory socket hooked up directly to my battery without a fuse for years with no problems.  Just use it occasionally to charge the cell phone or to plug in an air pump.  Nothing pligged in for continuous service.
