Check to make sure the cable is attached and not stuck. If the cable is spinning freely- hook it back up to the tach and with the engine running tap on the tach face with your knuckle- the tach may just be stuck.
Has the bike sat for a long time unused?
Betcha your tach cable fell off.
Check the back of the tach. ;)
Common GS issue.
Well if it did then I am an idiot. will look tomorrow morning.
Nope, not an idiot, it's a common thing.
Exhaust header bolts and shifter levers also have a habit of falling off.

when i noticed my shifter lever getting loose on the splines, i just used one of my nitrile gloves to shim it:
hold the glove over the spline, push the shifter lever on, rip the remainder off. it's a .20 cent fix, and it lasts till the next time you take the lever off for whatever.
:)
pipe tape on the tacho cable/speedo cable does a great job
:)
WTF? Surgical glove shim? Jeez, and you got at me for suggesting Loctite bearing tite.
You need some safety wire and a #54 drill...
Double standard, damn it! :icon_razz:
Is the bike a pre '04 ? Mine is an 04 and it has an electronic tach. Mine went nuts last year and had to be replaced. A month ago was changing a bulb and couldn't get the screw to tap back in had to use a slightly larger screw and a second washer to get it to work again what a pita!
