Today my Tachometer stopped working. It may be just me, but the bike even feels sluggish. Could it be spark plugs? Any help would be appreciated.

I guess I'll answer myself... :cry: I checked the cables and they were fine. I started bike and nothing. I decided to do my best impression of Oscar De La Joya and gave it a JAB. Ta-DA :) Problem fixed. There has to be a better way. Any suggestions. Bike still feels slower to me. I could just be getting used to the power of the bike. I have put 800 miles on since purchased. The bike does have 15,000 miles now. It's a 97. Any suggestions?

My tach stopped working a couple of months ago. I freaked out, then asked a few questions. The cable that runs into the engine was attached, but not tightened completely....I torqued her down a bit, and everything was cool.

When was the last time the air filter was changed/cleaned. Spark Plugs? Oil Changed? Had the valves checked and shimmed correctly?
The oil was changed at the time of purchase from the dealer. I checked and it looks good. As for the rest I have to inspect again. Don't get me wrong, the bike runs good. I don't have any starting problem (except the warm-up time), or the bike doesn't stall. It reaches the desired speeds (75 mph for me thank you. I have wife and kids you know.) I would just like more power at higher gears. It just seems that when I roll on the throttle at higher gears 4th and up it just seems sluggish. This could just be the nature of the beast. I don't know. I was planning to do a full tune-up now that the bike hit 15,000 miles (as suggested through the maintenance schedule in the manual.) Can I put a K&N filter in the stock housing? How does this affect the bikes fuel to air mixture (being that everything is stock? I think.) Thanks again all.

Depending on the RPM when your in the gear is how well it will accelerate. Bikes dont have much in the way of torque and HP is peaky and in the higher RPMs. If your 4k and below then a Ignition Advancer will really help out but even easier is to ride with it at higher RPMs. I rarely go below 5-6k when riding around on the street.
The K&N filter in the stock airbox doesnt require rejetting if you use the restrictor that should come with it. Otherwise you will need to rejet, but that means your making more power!

Yes, if you get the correct model and use the restrictor (like
JasonB said).

A 15 tooth front sprocket is what you need, especially if 75mph is fast enough. Much better accelleration at lower RPM's. Only about 30 RPM higher at any given speed compared to the stock 16 tooth.
I got mine from a local shop for only $15. Took about 10-15 minutes to change.

If you haven't done it yet, or if you're not sure if it's been done...a re-synchronization of the carbs may also be in order. This can help clean things up and sharpen your throttle response. Check it out... :thumb:

Hope Kerry sees this...he's kind of the "educational pro" here. I think I remember sometime back he described (with corresponding pics) how to synch the carbs with some tubing and oil.....Kerry? :?

mine came off, when i got to top of mountain rd, i noticed my tach not responding. got back into town, looked, and cable was just hanging there, reattached, all fine :thumb: :nana:

I've never taken pictures of the carb synch procedure myself, but there are several
